I did not realize that this is Carpenter's first appearance all year. Seems like he's always coming back from injuries against the Cubs. Maybe he'll be rusty and we can eek out a W despite Volstad pitching.

We screwed up in keeping them out of the playoffs last year and look what happened. They won the stupid World Series. Let's prevent that from happening again please.

I think that it's inevitable. Their magic # is 11, with their next 6 games vs. The Cubs and Astros. Brewers in turn get The Nats and Reds, and the Dodgers the Reds and Padres. All 3 are on the road. Reds and Nats have clinched playoff spots, but it's too early for them to start resting their regulars.

From Bruce's blog:

The Cubs’ 213 walks since the break are second most in the NL and fourth most in the majors.

Wait, pitching walks or hitting walks?

Hitting, oddly enough (which shows how bad the beginning of the season was since the Cubs are third to last in walks for the season).

Looks like Mr. Rowson is here to stay then.

I don't think they'll pass on Magadan because of that if that's who they had targeted all along.

They've also gone from scoring 3.7 runs a game to 4.0.

I wonder how much of that is Rowson and how much is getting guys like Valbuena and Castillo into the lineup. It's some of both, I suspect.

What's the difference in walk rate between Valbuena/Castillo/Jackson and Stewart/Soto/Byrd/Campana?

Yadi Molina just decided to become an elite hitter it seems.

It's getting really annoying.

I can't believe that he turned out like this and Geo turned out like he did.

I'm sure it's happened, but I can't remember anyone apart from the Steroid Era who just jacked up their career-high OPS by 150 points over a 2-year stretch this late in their career. He had played six full seasons before posting an .814 last year and is closing in on .900 this year.

ETA: His BABIP is a career-high .328 coming into today and his HR/FB rate is more than double any other season in his career other than last year, and is 50% better than even that season, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

Yeah, about 5 years ago.

This is his 3 year slash line:

.3053/.3489/.4653

The 'third year', his OPS was .671. His OPS+ was never above 100 before last season.

How many years was he an over .900 ops? How many over .800?

Edit, I guess he has come back to earth some he's sub .900 now.
