Could you guys stop arguing about the designated hitter, err I mean Starlin Castro and agree to the price of your new VW? Because this kind of feels like that commercial. :-k

He's 22 and has had an up and down season. You're allowed to be either optimistic about his future or pessimistic because of his struggles. In a few years when he's in his prime we can all get back on the same page.

For the people arguing that this season shouldn't impact one's view of Castro's future...how do you feel about Hosmer's season?

Really? Unless you and WSR are only reading Tim's posts I'm not sure how you're coming to your conclusions.

Is it possible to respect Tim's analysis as well as the analysis of those on the other side? Tim brings up very good points, so it's not just one of the usual doom and gloomers. I don't necessarily agree with the conclusion, but that doesn't mean that the analysis should be dismissed.

Didn't say it shouldn't be dismissed; just annoyed by your declaration that everything in the thread is "depressing." It's just seemingly the umpteenth example of you posting without reading everything.

I don't have to ready everything to find his analysis somewhat of a downer. Nobody, Tim included has said that Castro's doomed to follow in the footsteps of Corey Patterson, but still not the type of thing that you want to see in a thread that I didn't expect to see make it past a page before someone slapped a padlock on it.

Tim brought up some very valid points that sparked some conversation. What do you think is so wrong about this thread??

I know early on he hit into a lot of bad luck, not sure if that continued. But I think it's a sophomore slump.

Anthony Rizzo is incredibly lucky to have Starlin on the same team and share the "building block" title with to take the heat off him when he makes a mistake. Anthony forgets the outs and gets doubled off in LA, not one word. Starlin makes a mistake, and every Cubs writer goes wild with it. Starlin makes an error, people claim he can't focus. Rizzo makes an error, that's okay, he's young. It's also funny how Starlin's patience, or lack of, always is talked about, yet he has a higher BB% than Rizzo since his callup in June.

I do love them both, but it gets annoying that some people seem to have grown tired of Starlin, but Rizzo can do no wrong. Everyone needs to remember Starlin is STILL the youngest player on the team and is incredibly exciting.

BTW, unless you're talking about roided up Bonds, you can't really build around one player in the sport of baseball and be successful.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I saw Rizzo forget how many outs there were. Knew he wouldn't get any heat for it.

Yup. Sad, but totally expected.

To be fair, Starlin has a history of doing dumb [expletive] and Rizzo hasn't had near as many episodes (hasn't had near as much time to, admittedly, either). As for the fielding thing, Rizzo also just made his first error last week or something and was pretty much a very polished fielder from day one. Starlin may be a pretty good fielder now but most fans just see errors, which he has had tons of, and don't know any better. I don't think it's fair to just pin that entirely on a double standard.

Also, Rizzo's patience hasn't been called out because he's been (or had been) absolutely raking and hitting for huge power. If he starts to struggle, I'm sure his warts will be called out, just like they were in San Diego and just how people pointed them out before he was called up and had the early success here.

Castro was getting slammed the first time he made a "major" error.

Rizzo went a month and a half before he made one, IIRC.

I think the problems began on that Sunday Night Baseball game. Since then, he's been unable to shed the reputation as a guy who isn't always focused.

Castro OPS by month:

April - 784

May - 763

June - 711

July - 687

August so far - 513

Hmmm the dreaded steady regression, not good.

He's likely getting a reputation of the little brown guy who doesn't give it his all while Tony Campana wastes away in Iowa, despite the complete difference in positions. I can't wait until 2016 when Castro's accused of "blocking" Steven Bruno, who's hitting .320 with a .650 OPS in Iowa.

I have to admit that the whole racist talk on here always annoys me. It's thrown around way to easy.

Wasn't Sammy Sosa and his inflated ego overlooked for a long time? When he was hitting 60 bombs a season, wasn't most media and fans in love with him and his baseball has been very, very good to him thing?

Why did Todd Hundley get ripped on and hated so much if it's only minorities who get blasted or treated unfair?

I just want to know. I'm not saying I'm right. But it just seems like an annoying joke that everyone uses on here, without any real facts that somebody is indeed a racist. It's a strong thing to accuse somebody of without really knowing.
