What does everyone think of Alberto Cabrera? He has a 8/0 K/BB so far in Iowa in 4 innings since being promoted. SSS, but a dominant strike thrower out of the bullpen developed by the Cubs has been unheard of in recent years. Is he a better prospect than Dolis at this point? Closer potential?

I'd say he's a better prospect than Dolis. I suspect he'll be an 8th inning guy at the very least.

Yes and yes.

Brett Jackson talked with our friend Randy Peterson of the Des Moines Register about his problems with striking out. He has 114 in 297 at-bats.

"I believe to master your craft, you have to battle and struggle with it," Jackson told Peterson. "In the end, this is going to be a great experience for me."

News travels fast, and Jackson was well aware of Cubs manager Dale Sveum saying it was "alarming" that he was on pace to strike out 200 times in a minor-league season. Jackson seemed to take the comments to heart.

"Obviously I've been striking out too much, so I'm cutting down on my swing and trying to be more of who I am," Jackson said to Peterson. "I was trying to be someone probably greater than who I am, and who I am is a player I think can help a team win, with the speed I have."

@dsmaples is that why you haven't started a game this year? that sucks, hope it gets better soon. I'm looking forward to seeing u in action.

@Vinestal yeah and I can't wait to get out there

So I guess his back has been his issue. I've not really seen this reported elsewhere so I figured it was worth posting.

vinestal, thanks much for that info. Very interesting, that changes the equation completely. I've been assuming it was a bad arm, and bad arms usually stay bad or end up in surgery sooner or later.

Bad back may almost be worse, not sure there is as successful a correction for back as is TJ for elbows. But nice to know.

No, that's just what it is currently. He's had two different arm issues since January as well. He just got a clean MRI on his elbow last month or so. Then had a slight setback after that. Started throwing, no clue what his exact status is. A couple weeks ago he said he'd be pitching his first game sometime in July. Who knows?

Hopefully once the back is straightened out he'll be able to get it going again.

Jackson double and Vitters walk in the 1st inning.

And Blake DeWitt stranded them both.

So Volsted, maybe Wells and Coleman are the next in line for the fifth stater spot...but at this point I'd almost prefer to see Raley first and Rusin second.

Vitters BB part 2 for the night

Castro and Vitters both walked TWICE today. What the hell is going on!?

2007-2010: 3.4%

2011: 4.5%

This season: 6.2%

He's made real progress in this area. If he can keep it in the 5-6% range it's more like "acceptably bad" than "horrific."

If he can start hitting for more power (as he has been), his walk numbers should improve just from being pitched more carefully.
