Yet another Daytona reliever having a really good run is Scott Weismann. 18.1 IP, 20/3 K/BB, 19 H, 3 HR after a perfect 2 K inning today.

@Kevin_Goldstein

He was awful tonight. Sat 89, 3 bb. QT @rknox12: Saw Burke a couple years ago in Peoria, any chance he makes it as a loogy?

Definitely not his best outing, but...

He found out just before game he was pitching second. Then there was a 30 minute autograph session on the field right up until game time. To add to that, the starter struggled, being pulled after 5 batters. Kyler wasn't thrilled that he had about 10 minutes to warmup.

On his way to Daytona now to join the rotation.

Some DSLers who have caught my attention early:

Jose Paulino: 2.40 ERA 15 IP 1/21 BB/K: somewhat depressing that he was born 2 months before I graduated high school. even more depressing is that I graduated high school almost 17 years ago.

Daury Torrez (SP) 0.56 ERA 16 IP 0/15

Pedro Araujo (SP) 1.80 15 IP 2/12

Amalio Reyes (SP) 1.72 15.2 2/12

Carlos Rodriguez (SP) 1.20 15 IP 5/17

Victor Salazar (RP) 1.93 ERA 9.1 IP 4/11

Kelvin Encarnacion (CF) .343/.540/.657/1.197 3 HR 35 AB

Enderson Mercedes (OF) .286/..381/.771 1.152 5 HR 35 AB. 16 K in those 35 AB though. Ouch.

Jenner Emeterio (SS) .583/.615/.1.167/1.782: Just 3 games and 12 AB, but it sure looks nice.

A good sign if Vitters can keep progressing his doubles power into homerun power as he physically matures from the rail thin 17 year old that was drafted out of high school. That will help balance out some of his other weaknesses (that he seems to be moderately improving on).

I've always felt that Vitters would "hit" enough to make it. I know he hasn't put up a huge average anywhere, and he hasn't put up big power numbers, but I feel that he could put up league average offensive numbers. .270-.280 average, slugging in the mid-high 400s, but only get on base 32-33% of the time at best. Those wouldn't be horrible numbers IF he fields his position well enough or if the Cubs didn't already have guys like Castro, Soriano, and Barney who don't get on base enough.

Well, only Castro is likely to be around by the time Vitters would become a staple in the lineup.

League average for a 3B this year is 255/318/409

and Vitters has a .229/.269/.366 MLE

it's hard to reconcile everyone pissing all over themselves with excitement over this guy when he's hitting worse than the much-villified Brett Jackson

I think your interpretation of the posts on this board are a little off.

1) please show an example of someone pissing over themselves with excitement

2) At this point, they are putting up similar OPS (.798 vs .822)

3) Vitters is still a year younger than Jackson

4) Vitters doesn't have the same bust-factor that Jackson has due to the contact issues

sulley

that really only says to me that he was rushed; he still isn't showing any skills to suggest he's more than a Shea Hillenbrand/Casey McGehee replacement-level washout at best

also, Jackson's age-22 venture in the PCL: .297/.388/.551...what does/did that prove?

4) Vitters doesn't have the same bust-factor that Jackson has due to the contact issues

Jackson's one big fault might be fixable (see: Michael Saunders), whereas Vitters just has always had the same glaring limitations that keep him the same very-low-ceiling bore of a prospect

Jackson, Rizzo, and Szczur now maybe, at least project to all have decent OBP going forward.

I don't know about that, we are seeing Jackson doesn't have a great hit tool (at least when it comes to contact) and if k's around 30% at the ML level he's going to have to sustatin a pretty high BABIP to keep a respectable batting average to record a decent OBP even if he does walk a lot because right now it looks like he will be a .220-.240 hittier in the majors with his striking out/contact issues. I think Vitters and Jackson could likely end up with similar OBP's once they get to the majors, they are just going to compile it differently, Vitters will sustain his with a higher BA/more htits and Jackson will sustain his with a higher BB%/lower BA/fewer hits.

So you don't think the new hitting philosophy being preached throughout the system has any possibility of making an improvement in Vitters' approach? That makes me think you're a low ceiling bore of a fan.

Yeah, there's only like 2-3 guys pissing themselves. Certainly not "everyone", but it is enough to make it smell like a subway stop.

What's the average age of PCL 3B?

.285/.343/.445, as of yesterday

also, Vitters has been below-average offensively amongst PCL 3B

Is that adjusted for park?

no, but i can't imagine it changing anything; you'd have parks like Albuquerque and Vegas bringing the average up a bit, and Tacoma and Portland bringing it down (Iowa's also a fairly friendly place to hit)

it hasn't had any noticeable effect on his patience so far, and Castro's patience is regressing (as an example); i think you're overrating its impact

mods, please get to work on my new custom title
