Press Release:

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs have thus far signed 21 players selected in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, including right-handed pitcher Pierce Johnson out of Missouri State University, who was the second player drafted by the club with the 43rd overall pick (compensation round).

In addition to Johnson, the list of new Cubs signees thus far includes left-handed pitcher Anthony Prieto (fifth round), right-handed pitcher Chad Martin (10th round), outfielder Bijan Rademacher (13th round), right-handed pitcher Michael Hamann (16th round) and right-handed pitcher Eduardo Orozco (22nd round).

Johnson, 21, had a 2.53 ERA (28 ER/99.2 IP) in 14 starts for Missouri State University this past season, recording a single-season school record 119 strikeouts to lead the Missouri Valley Conference, averaging 10.7 strikeouts per 9.0 innings of work. He helped lead the Bears to their first NCAA Regional appearance in nine years, going 2-1 with a 1.36 ERA in his final four starts, and was twice named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.

The six-foot-three, 180-pound Johnson in 2011 ranked ninth in the conference with 72 strikeouts and recorded 8.6 strikeouts per 9.0 innings of work. In three seasons with Missouri State University, Johnson struck out 227 batters in 216.0 innings of work, the fifth-highest career strikeout total in Bears history.

Currently, the Cubs are $482,200 under for the picks they've signed ($644,694 if the Cubs go 5% over, which is the limit without forfeiting picks next year).

Thus far, they haven't signed the following top-10 round picks:

1: Albert Almora

2: Duane Underwood

3: Ryan McNeil

6: Trey Lang

I'd say Lang is signed. He just thanked the Cubs scouting department and the entire organization, saying his dream's coming true.

David Bote meeting with Cubs tomorrow, to possibly finalize contract worth more than 100,000. This according to a newscaster in Colorado. The first thing that went through my mind is 100,000 bonus, plus paid tuition.

Well, tuition wouldn't hurt the Cubs bonus limits.

Anybody know what can all be included in these? "Tuition" is one thing, and can be enormous. Room and board can be a whole lot more. And expenses.

I just wonder how or whether the cba has any constraints on how these values can be structured when supplementing the $100K dollars. Anybody know or have any ideas? uk?

It varies by organization, I know if we sign someone and it's 75% college and 75K signing bonus, that 75% will cover tuition (24K of 32K) and R & B, meals, parking, etc. is included.

Paying for college really isn't an issue for MLB teams since most don't use it, you got two years to use once you're released, most bounce around other organizations until it expires.

Thanks for the info, UK. I had never thought about a time restraint on the tuition or that most guys flail around the minors long after getting cut the first time.

I can't remember the actual #s, but I think only 15-20% who are released and have the scholly option, actually use it. Instead of school, for the kids who have no desire to step foot in the classroom again, there can be an increase in the signing bonus if they would rather have the quick cash (usually not much).

Here's a recap on guys that haven't signed, that we've heard at least SOMETHING out of.

Almora-Obviously it's going to be taken down to the wire.

Underwood- Went on vacation with his family to discuss things after getting drafted. Haven't heard anything else, other than he has retweeted a few Cub fans hoping he gets signed.

McNeil- Supposed to meet with the Cubs soon and has said if the money is the same as they've talked about already, he wants to play pro ball.

Bote- appears ready to sign.

Tomscha- Marlin at PSD said he's a likely sign

Hickman- weighing his options. If he were drafted as a pitcher, he would have went much higher, but wants to catch.

Drossner- someone tweeted congrats on signing with the Cubs, but nothing since. Could have been meaning congrats on just getting drafted.

Wiseman- Pretty much zero chance.

Bonnell- playing summer ball and deciding. Pitched well recently and said he hoped the Cubs saw that.

Pannone- yet to decide between Cubs or Miami. Said he'll make decision in couple of weeks.

Crum- tweeted pics of college facilities recently, said he was showing his mom around. My guess is again, he's very doubtful to sign.

Sveum- not signing

Bremer tweeted he's signed a while ago, but haven't seen him listed yet as being official. Same thing with Pentecost. Haven't seen a single thing on the other guys. Again, everything I HAVE seen basically comes from Yagyu, over at PSD, who's done phenomenal work compiling info.

Bote's JUCO coach tweeted that he signed.

Onelkis Garcia signed with the Dodgers for a tad UNDER 3rd round slot. Badler said he may be better than Concepcion. Guess the rumors were way off on him.

Ruiz looks like he's getting 1.85 mill. Raisin, I think you're definitely safe with Virant now.

Yeah, I read that. What's even better about this is Ruiz was USC's biggest recruit.

Posted
Awesome. Gotta wonder what Virant's pricetag was. Must have been at least 2 mill, because I would think they'd have taken him over Ruiz, if the money was the same. Now, they've got no shot at Hinojosa or Traver either. Would have thought they wound up with 2 of that group for sure, not just Ruiz.

I think Hinojosa was more unsignable than Virant.

The Astros have done a fantastic job, signing 3 top 50 talents/2 top 15 talents despite all the spending limits.

I know that I could sift through 41 pages to find this, but who was the mid-late round guy who was an extreme long shot to sign and said that he was 100% committed to some college ($ says hi)? Any word on him?

25th rounder Rhett Wiseman.

There's probably still a 99.9% chance he ends up at Vanderbilt and there has been no new news on him.
