And? You don't think his patience or power numbers will improve over the next 110 games?

They should.

My main concern is the defense, seeing whether it holds up long term, and it being potentially inflated by the shifts too. I mean, Barney is 10th in bWAR thanks in large part to defensive metrics.

I'm aware. Still, we have 50 games of defensive metrics to base that on. I want it to be really real, but we just have to wait and see.

Plus if he does have a BABIP unlucky year, how much does his value tank? I realize this doesn't matter in a predictive sense, but it seems like a lot of his value comes from his ability to sustain a .350 BABIP.

hell, that's true for Joey Votto, Matt Kemp, Joe Mauer, David Wright, Josh Hamilton...

ZIPS ROS has him as a minus fielder and still projects him to finish over 4 WAR, but since Castro's made just 2 errors in his last 35 games (7 in the first 15 prior to that), i'm inclined to emphatically take the over on the defensive projection anyway

Encouraging stuff.

When black Friday rolls along, you often hear about these insane blockbuster deals like a 52 inch flat screen for $250. In reality, a very small amount of those $250 flat screens are available, and more customers than not are going to visit that store to find that the $250 flat screen is sold out. However, many of them figure that once they're in the store anyway, they'll do some browsing, and the salesmen show them some other bargains that they might not have wanted at first, such as an I Pod dock, some video games, a 24 boxed set, Carlos Marmol, or a lap top. Hopefully in our case, nobody walks home with Starlin Castro, but they do some bargain shopping anyway.

Beautifully written.

I don't wanna trade Castro. He'll be a star for years. But if we were offered something like:

Trout/Garrett Richards/Kaleb Cowert/etc

Bundy/Machado/Matusz

Lawrie/D'Arnaud/Drabek or Gose

it would be interesting to entertain the offer. But those offers will never happen.

Just wondering, but wouldn't more people rather have Trout straight up than Castro?

I think Castro has more potential for growth despite being 16 months older. Trout's pretty likely to be better this season and is under team control for an extra year.

Today, ESPN did a "franchise player" draft, where they selected 30 "GMs" to draft a franchise player each. Castro was drafted 9th.

Over the next 10 years, Castro is projected to have the 10th best WAR among all players. The nine ahead of him: Longoria, Kemp, Trout, Kershaw, Tulo, Verlander, Harper, Stanton, and McCutchen.

If one of those 9 players isn't coming back, I'm not really interested in trading Castro.

Agreed, except I'd narrow it down even further. No pitchers.

I don't think Theo will actually trade Castro unless he gets a significant return.

interesting point.

Trust me I would have been made fun of more for what I originally said before editing.

Castro won't be traded but if the Cubs could get two top prospects for him, I'd at least consider it. But again, he won't be traded.

No. No no no.

No. No no no.

Castro is Castro, but a prospect could develop to be anything! He could even be the next Castro!

WAR is a cumulative statistic correct? So if Castro has a 2.2 WAR in 50 games, he should be close to 7.0 WAR by the end of the year?

If that's true, there were only 2 position players in the NL last year with a WAR above 7.0 (Braun and Kemp)

Nailed it.

You know he was sitting there, thinking he had to somehow comment on this, and when all was said and done that's what he came up with. Even da Bum would be shaking his head.

I'd be open to trading Castro if we got the moon and a couple of planets for him. But I doubt anyone is going to pay that for him. Offer him to Washington for Harper and Strasburg, and we'll talk.

I think before people make too much out of this, Castro is likely available in the same fashion that Garza was in the summer. I guarantee it will cost 2 top shelf prospects plus a few low level/high ceiling guys. Otherwise, there's no reason that they'd trade a player like that at his age and price. Unless of course the don't plan on contendong for the next 5 years, in which case Samrdjzia wouldn't be off limits.
