Catchers typically go higher than they should quite often, due to scarcity. I'll be surprised if Okey or Ciuffo are around. Martinez seems 50/50 in my mind as to whether he'll even be there. Brian Navarreto is my guess at who we take, if we go C, in the 2nd. I'm sure they've got a good grasp on him anyway, he was a teammate of Javy's.

Blake (Chicago) Local writer thinks the Cubs may draft Jonathon Gray as their 1st round pick. What say you?

Klaw: I've been saying that for a few weeks - if Appel goes one, I believe the Cubs would take Gray two. If Appel doesn't go 1-1, I think the Cubs would take him. There isn't a great third option for either spot - taking one of the Georgia prep OFs would be a clear step down.

Gray's start will be on FOX College Sports. Game time is 6:30 pm CDT tonight.

Appel went 8, gave up 7 hits, 3 earned runs, walked 2, K'd 7. Not his best obviously. Washington, as a team, was hitting .244 entering the game.

I know jack about college baseball... how do the Pac-12 and Big-12 compare competition wise?

Honestly, I just follow players(and the ACC, mainly just UNC). That said, the Pac 12 has 4 teams in the top 25 and Oklahoma is the only team from the Big 12 in it.

The Pac-12 is a significantly better conference, though Appel hasn't faced any of the top tier schools (Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA & Arizona State).

Kiley McDaniel with another update on some risers and fallers in Florida. He had this tidbit on Karsten Whitson, whose case is starting to sound somewhat reminiscent of Lucas Giolito last spring:

Gators RHP Karsten Whitson has had a lot of problems the past two seasons with injuries, inconsistency and limited innings. After going unsigned as the 9th overall pick in the 2010 draft, Whitson had a standout freshman year for the Gators before his current troubles. He’ll be out for the season with a shoulder injury, will take a redshirt and return as a junior in 2014, but may begin throwing again before the draft. Depending on the timetable, Whitson could be a summer follow pick and a few teams have been keeping close tabs on his recovery. If a team finds itself in a situation like the Pirates last spring with Mark Appel, he could be a backup plan if there is a high-dollar game of chicken with another player. As recently as fall scout day in November, Whitson sat 92-95 in a two-inning outing and an above average to plus slider and changeup, reminiscent of his high school promise.

Callis set the over/under at 6 mill on what Appel signs for. To me, that doesn't bode well for us. The Astros could sign him at that figure and save over 1.5 mill from their slot, enabling them to employ their same strategy as last year.

Isn't that over/under simply the bet on whether he goes 1,2,3? You really think Boras/Appel will accept less than slot if he goes #1?

In a case like this, I think so. He's a senior, its a big improvement over the 3.8 he was offered by the Pirates last year, and heading to an independent league, where its still very likely he'd get drafted again, is just too risky. Personally, I'd like for us to have whoever we take at 2 already agreed to terms. If not, we could take Appel, Boras holds up, and that causes us to have to wait in negotiating any overslot deals all the way down the draft.

Appel will get slot, if not slightly over slot, at 1.1 or 1.2. He can negotiate till the week before the 2014 draft, so he will hold that as some form of leverage against teams trying to negotiate to the July 15th signing deadline on their other picks.

Hypotheticsl: Appel wants 7 mill, Gray wants 6. If you have Appel very slightly ahead, but you see both having 1/2 potential, who do you take?

Like you said, if you only have Appel slightly ahead, I'd think you'd have to go with Gray.

Here you go, davell:

@jimcallisBA 53s

Would be tempted to. @skin_graph: If Appel and Gray were on the board and you could save $1 mil by taking Gray, would you do it? #mlbdraft

That's a hard question for me to answer because I don't have Appel only slightly ahead. Maybe slightly ahead in terms of ceiling (or even equal), but not that close in terms of floor (and ability to rise quickly).

Appel. If there's any differentiation at all in your mind, take the better player.

Its why I put we see them both as future 1 or 2's. I'd take the cheaper guy because that extra mill could help in getting another big potential guy you wouldn't have a chance at otherwise.
