Not going to give more details, but there are two pitchers in the consensus top ten I'd red flag if I had that power.

I was in Vegas last week and saw Pete Rose sitting at a folding table at a store in the Mirage with literally nobody in line to get an autograph.

Apparently this is his job now.

@kileymcd: I think the Cubs are the only high pick I haven't heard a below slot rumor about. it's only good business to let one get out, real or not.

He's been doing that thing for a while now out there, the last 5-6 times I've been out there dating back to probably mid 2000s he was "working" doing the same thing at the sports memorabilia place in the Ceasar Palace shops.

The Astros realize they need a pre-arranged deal to make this work, right? If you make a pick without one, they have every right to hold out for full slot.

Imagine if the Astros didn't sign their pick this year. That basically means they can have both Beede and Rodon next year. I don't think it's necessarily a horrible idea other than the cap implication on the draft this year.

Can competitive balance picks be traded during the draft? Or do they need to be traded before the draft starts?

No idea, but the logistics of trying to make the trade mid-draft seem pretty crazy. You've got 2 minutes between picks at that point, I think.

I think it'd be a situation where the team with the pick has already agreed to make the trade, if a certain player is still on the board the other team wants.

I don't know if he'd make it to our 2nd round pick, but I would be intrigued with the idea of getting Ryan Eades if he was there. He's inconsistent, but he has a number 2 ceiling when he's on, and I wonder if getting into a pro atmosphere would iron out his mechanics.

In the 3rd, I'm not sure he gets there either as he's a fairly high ceiling college arm in that range, but Tyler Skulina would be a guy that I'd be interested in.

If they opted for a lower cost pick in the 2nd, I wonder about a guy like Chad Pinder. Ceiling isn't huge, but he's a solid player. That said, power might be debatable at 3rd.

ABTY's latest update

12 1/2 hours out:

Astros: Bryant 70%, Moran 15%, 'Other' 15% (Interesting side note: Astros have called on Kohl Stewart and Austin Meadows within the last 24 hours- likely due diligence however if one goes all Carlos Correa and takes 3+M under slot, this thing could blow open in a hurry)

Cubs: Narrowed to three with Moran no longer viewed as a viable option. Still hearing Bryant may actually be ahead of Appel on their board- again, I'll gladly concede to MB's Appel then Bryant however Bryant himself still seems to believe the Cubs will take him

Rockies: Dom Smith is a viable option- Rockies want significant under slot deal...

Twins: There is a scenario gaining some steam where the Twins may have both Appel and Gray to choose from, although the Twins also would like to go under slot... They've apparently talked themselves into Gray to the point where if they were selecting first, they still likely would take him

Indians: VERY confident the Indians board has Bryant, Moran, Appel, Frazier, Stewart, Grey in that order...

Marlins: I'm hearing possible off the board signing here, possibly Phil Bickford...

Red Sox: Locked in on Kohl Stewart or Clint Frazier

Royals: Everything points to them simply taking BA- hearing Shipley, Stanek have almost identical grades on their board as does Frazier and Meadows... DJ Peterson wouldn't completely shock me either...

Wow, who do they think they are, the NFL?

Thing I feel confident stating on the morning of draft day (unless I turn out to be wrong):

1) Moran was brought in to the discussion by the top teams for leverage purposes and isn't really going top 2.

2) The Cubs will take the top player on their board regardless of underslot potential or lack of it.

3) The Astros really screwed up not taking Buxton last year.

Peter Gammon was the first to report the Dominic Smith to the Rockies rumor yesterday. Keith Law and Kiley McDaniel have both confirmed there's something to those rumors.

1. HOUSTON ASTROS: Houston may have a slight preference for Appel, but only at the right price. As a college senior, the July 12 signing deadline doesn’t apply to the Houston native, allowing him to essentially hold a club’s bonus pool hostage if he chooses. The Astros won’t take him without assurances of his cost. There was a lot of buzz Wednesday evening that the Cubs were closing in on a deal with Appel at No. 2, which could mean: a) he’d subsequently try to scare off Houston; b) he’d see if the Astros could trump Chicago’s offer; or c) no agreement is imminent and this is just an attempt to increase his leverage.

BA's final mock: http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/mock-draft-4-0-the-final-countdown/

For now, I’m sticking with Oklahoma righthander Jonathan Gray as the No. 1 choice. There’s no indication that his positive drug test for Adderall will affect the stock of BA’s top-rated prospect, and I’m told it’s not an issue with Houston.

Some sources think the Astros would take San Diego third baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant ahead of Gray. Others believe they’ll seek a heavy discount from their assigned $7,790,400 pick value by taking North Carolina third baseman Colin Moran, but that doesn’t make sense for reasons I outlined in Mock v3.0. Frazier and Meadows are possibilities in a similar scenario.

PROJECTED PICK: Jonathan Gray.

(Mock Draft 1.0: Mark Appel/2.0: Jonathan Gray/3.0: Gray)

2. CHICAGO CUBS: Chicago’s final four consists of the top four college prospects, with the pitchers ahead of the hitters. I’m told Gray’s positive test isn’t an issue with the Cubs either, and some of their decision-makers may prefer him to Appel.

PROJECTED PICK: Mark Appel.

(Mock Draft 1.0: Jonathan Gray/2.0: Mark Appel/3.0: Appel)

Would love it if the Cubs used a full-slot offer to their top choice to muscle out the Astros, who seem to be very interested in underslotting again.

I tend to agree.

Also the stories of Manaea not offering his medicals was false:

This version doesn’t find a first-round home for Indiana State lefthander Sean Manaea, a candidate to go No. 1 overall before his stuff declined amid ankle, hip and shoulder ailments this spring. Teams received his medical records this week, and two sources told Baseball America that they revealed a labrum tear in his hip. There was no structural damage indicated in his shoulder, though one of the sources said his club would want more information, which it won’t have before the draft.

Happy Draft Day, you guys.

In case this hasn't been posted before, here's the official MLB Draft tracker which will be tweeting each pick as they happen:

I wonder if someone originally heard labrum and assumed wrong, and that was the cause of the confusion surrounding his injury.
