1 Mark Appel

POS: RHP HT: 6-5 WT: 215 School: Stanford

Analysis: So the last rumor of the night Wednesday … or the small hours of Thursday morning, had the Astros trying to nail down a price from Appel so they could take him with the first pick and still ensure that they had enough savings to exceed MLB's bonus recommendations with picks 40 and 74. They could still take Colin Moran, or Jonathan Gray, or (least likely) Kris Bryant.

2 Jonathan Gray

POS: RHP HT: 6-4 WT: 239 School: Oklahoma

Analysis: Appel or Gray here, with money probably a major variable as the Cubs seem to view the two guys as very close. They may not have a choice if the Astros take one of the two, in which case Chicago will take the other.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO

3 Kris Bryant

POS: 3B/OF B/T: R/R HT: 6-5 WT: 215 School: San Diego

Analysis: The Rockies have been linked to Bryant all spring. Rumor of the week has the Rockies shocking everyone here with Dominic Smith, although I get the sense that they like Smith a lot but not with this pick.

Thanks!

In response to my question Who do you guys think cubs have ranked 1 and 2.

He says "College pitcher and College Batter...1 and 2"

I bet they are split on Bryant and Appel. Deciding vote to Theo. Saw Arguello with that thought earlier.

Law has Phil Bickford falling out of round 1 due to signability questions.

Rasin, whatever happend to that high school catcher out of yukon, ok? Early on, he was like a top-15 guy and now I don't hear him mentioned. Is he a tough sign or what's the deal with him?

EDIT

Oops, nevermind, I see Law has him in the low 20s.

Denney is definitely singable. He had a bit of a down season to drop him to the back half of the first round but he might go higher because he's singable.

This word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

Means he can sing.....like butter or something.

Didn't someone say Bickford wanted 3 mil? That means, what, roughly in that 7-10 mix to try and get slot? If he doesn't go there, it does make some sense that he might fall, although I wonder about teams like the Cardinals/Yankees, with extra 1st rounders.

Just heard that Cubs have a feel for Appel asking price and that it is likely beyond what Houston wants to pay.

I wonder if the Astros would be doing this again with a crack at Rodon on the table?

I think it would be really stupid. A lot can happen in a year.

BA's mock obviously has Sean Manaea dropping out of the first but also has Austin Wilson dropping out too.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Cardinals take one of them at 28.

Probably not since losing out on 1.1's slot sinks the rest of this year's draft. And it's probably time to acknowledge that, as of now, there are three other guys with an equal or better chance at being the first pick next year - Rodon's teammate Trea Turner, prep RHP Touki Touissant and prep C/OF Alex Jackson.

ABTY again

Appel does in fact have a number in place (NOT a deal- lots more to this than just figures; 40 man spot? bonus structure? etc.) with the Cubs for 88-90% of slot... Astros number is somewhere between 3.75-5M, Cubs coming in at just about 6M...

Monkey wrech time: hearing the FO has taken the 6M figure to Gray and asked if he'd be willing to accept 5-5.5M... ploy to get Appel's number down? Really interested in Gray?... I dunno to be honest fellas... still feel its Appel...

90% of slot for 1.2 is $6,037,560, which would be a savings of $670,840.

Don't forget the Cubs can go 5% over and not forfeit a draft pick next year - that 5% amounts to $527,825.

Not sure what Rodon has to do with their strategy in this draft.

I'm wondering if the Astros would pass on Rodon if they couldn't get him well below slot.

Plus, they signed college seniors in rounds 8-10 last year for 10k apiece, giving them around 400k to spend on earlier picks. I could see them possibly going rounds 6-10 or 7-10 this year with the same strategy.

The great @jimcallisBA still predicting top of the draft goes Gray, Appel, Bryant, but some talk in baseball Cubs will take Bryant at No. 2.

Kiley McDaniel's final mock draft: http://sbb.scout.com/2/1297610.html

RHP Mark Appel Stanford

ANALYSIS: Part of the reason I think that's true is the rumor I've written for the past month--that the Cubs like Appel enough over Gray to try to offer him slot or even more to tempt him to play coy with Houston to slide to #2--has been making the rounds lately. I think Appel ends up here and, as outlined in the chart above, Moran or Gray at #1 affects the order of the next few picks.
