http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/top-100-draft-flashback-naming-names/

That covers 3B drafted in the top 100. College 3B have the highest graduation rate(100+ MLB games) of any position grouping at 57%. Here's all the top 10 picks that were college 3B as far as BR can tell, this will include players beyond BA's sample of the last 20 years:

Player bWAR Year
Ventura 55.9 1988
Teixeira 47.8 2001
M. Williams 46.5 1986
Glaus 38.0 1997
Braun 34.0 2005
Longoria 30.6 2006
Zimmerman 29.8 2005
B. Horner 21.7 1978
Gordon 18.9 2005
Burrell 18.6 1998
Nevin 15.9 1992
Incaviglia 10.2 1985
D. Chalk 8.5 1972
P. Alvarez 1.5 2008
D. Roberts 0.1 1972
Rendon 0.1 2011
Williamson -0.8 1994

So in other words, with a couple careers still pending(Alvarez & Rendon), the worst college 3B drafted in the Top 10 of the last 15 years was Pat Burrell.

I can't help but want to put Alvarez in the bust category. But I guess he is still only 26 and has shown enough to have a couple more years.

Yeah, a little early there to call Alvarez a bust.

1400 PAs of everything except his HR and BB numbers being awful

He's a league average 3rd baseman at the least now with the potential to be better especially if he can continue playing great defense like he is this season. If he can string 4- 3+ win seasons together, he isn't a bust. Mild disappointment, maybe.

I find that extremely unlikely.

Pat Burrell was a 3B in college? lol.

He was the biggest thing since sliced bread when he came out. That was probably the first draft I paid attention to, when the Cubs took Patterson. I think the whole "established college bat" versus the unknown high school talent debate was at the forefront.

I still can't say I hate the idea of drafting the bat and then going for quantity with pitching like last year.

Nor do I, but I'd then like to see them aggressive pursue a somewhat sure thing front end starter like David Price or/and try to do business with a pitching rich organization like Oakland or Arizona.

Kiley McDaniel mock: http://sbb.scout.com/2/1296613.html

He lists 5 options. The guy that gets picked in his mock, their next 3 options and who they hope for (but has already been picked):

Cubs pick Gray. 2nd choice: Bryant, 3rd choice: Moran, 4th choice: Frazier. They're hoping for Appel.

Kieth Law just tweeted: Oklahoma RHP Jonathan Gray tested positive for a banned stimulant in MLB predraft testing: http://klaw.me/18NVvhO

Whoa. What does that mean for him?

Thankfully, I'm good with either Appel or Bryant, so this isn't a crushing blow.

The positive test result will not result in a suspension, but will make Gray subject to additional follow-up testing once he begins his pro career, according to a source with Major League Baseball.

@ProfessorParks I don't think people realize how many players abuse Adderall. It's a legit issue. You do what you can to get ahead. Some get caught.

Oh [expletive]. No clue what this means. Its certainly possible to have a plausible explanation. If he does, my guess is it doesn't affect him at all. However, if he doesn't.....Then holy [expletive].

I wonder what that means for his draft status.

The article seems to say they dont think it will effect his draft status. I'm not sure though. Parks also tweeted : Jason Parks ‏@ProfessorParks 1m

I use it to tweet with more velocity and wit. RT @Ryan_Probasco: @ProfessorParks College students use it all the time as well.

Adderall...

Wonder what that does for his draft status. Hell, wonder if he'll be allowed to pitch Friday against LSU.

Is it against the ncaa drug policy?
