I want to say I'm disgusted, but really I'm just impressed. I hope I get to the point in life where I can give literally zero fucks like that

I am also fascinated by unlucky teams. Seattle rates. Their pythag is 80-57; actual is 74-63. On the surface it looks like the pythag is driven by the pitching staff, because their hitters aren't that much better than the Cubs'.

so the Cubs are only a game behind their pythag now. cool.

the unlucky 79-60 A's are 7 games behind their pythag. damn.

Just as in June, when their Pythagorean was significantly better than better predictive models that showed the cubs weren't as good as the Pythagorean suggestion , now the more predictive models are much higher on the cubs. Their third order win percentage is .503, which translates to 70-70.

By BaseRuns, the Cubs should be 71-69 right now.

NL Central BaseRuns Projected Standings:

Pirates: 74-65 (.530)

Cardinals: 71-68 (.508)

Cubs: 71-69 (.507)

Brewers: 68-71 (.493)

Reds: 65-74 (.467)

Things are going to be interesting next year.

Cardinals pythag is 69-70. figures.

Because they have a negative run differential. Its only -3 now, but they have significantly closed the gap over the last 10 or so days (I thin it was -25 last week). Based on pythag they have been the luckiest team in baseball (+7); the Yankees are second (+6); Royals are next (+5).

Way to extricate that from the larger quote. Nicely done.

How does the rest of the quote make that any less of an obvious statement worthy of good natured ridicule?

Your National League batting average leader: Ben Revere, at .314, with a .330 OBP.

I guess what I'm saying is Castro actually had a real shot at this the way he'd been hitting.

What's the lowest season ending leader ever?

According to Wikipedia it was Tony Gwynn with a .313 AVG in 1988 for the National League and Carl Yastrzemski with a .301 AVG in 1968 in the American League

Don't forget that .369 SLG!

Revere is arguably having the worst .300 BA season in baseball history with a .700 OPS to go with his .314 BA.

He was even worse last year with a .305 average and a .691 OPS, but didn't have enough PAs to qualify.

I was curious to see what the smallest all-time differential between BA and OPS for a .300 hitter was, but couldn't find it. There were a number of articles (like the one I linked above) that looked at wOBP, OPS+, or WS.

Texas became the first team mathematically eliminated from playoff contention last night by losing to the Mariners. The Rangers can no longer finish ahead of the A's, Angels or Mariners, and thus can't get a playoff spot.

Maybe he'll immediately get a job on MLB Network and then have to talk about how much of a mess things are with the FO in Arizona like Josh Byrnes has had to do with the Padres and it will be super awkward and hilarious

Like a week ago the Cardinals were looking in trouble and now they're about two games from clinching or something.

When the calendar hits September, they stop losing and everyone they need to lose starts losing.

That's because their team was built the right way and everyone else does it wrong, obviously.

Probably also helps that you get your best positional player and one of your best pitchers back at the same time

Letter: Hardee's commercial during Cardinals games is pornographic

Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and pornography. That’s what you’ll get if you watch the St. Louis Cardinals on TV. Every fan I know has remarked on the filthy Hardee’s commercial featuring a nearly nude woman writhing in soap suds. It’s pornography, pure and simple.

A few Sundays ago I sat down with my family after church to watch the Cardinals. When this commercial came on, my 86-year-old mother, almost in tears said, “Why do they have to do this?” My 13-year-old granddaughter hid her face and my 11-year-old grandson was so embarrassed, he didn’t know where to look. My 89-year-old father — who played baseball in the St. Louis Browns organization — apologized “I’m sorry this is on my TV,” as if it were his fault.

Then it came on again, and my mom grabbed for the remote to try to turn the channel. We were all embarrassed. And then it came on again, and I got mad.

I couldn’t help but think of Stan Musial, the standard bearer of the Cardinals and a man of impeccable character. He had to be looking down from heaven with tears in his eyes.

Since then, I’ve called the offices of team owner Bill DeWitt Jr. and president Bill DeWitt III and left five messages. I have not had the courtesy of a return phone call. Unfortunately, Hardee’s money trumps fans' concerns. Maybe thousands need to call the DeWitts. Will they listen?
