Who the hell cares about the stupid Marlins anymore? I'm over it. Yeah I get it they beat us in 03, their owner is a POS, they stole money from Miami taxpayers for a stadium no one goes to, and their fans are horrible, the few that they have.

Sure would be awesome to seem them in the playoffs!!!

I said I'd love to see the teams involved with the Marlins one of the 10 teams. I'm sorry which of these teams would you rather see in there: Reds, Cardinals, Dodgers, Mets, Phillies? The Padres, Pirates, Nats, DBacks, Rockies would be more ideal than Miami, but whatever, again one of 10 teams.

I would like to see the Cubs involved. I'm not getting any enjoyment out of seeing the Marlins there, regardless of who it keeps out.

Why in the world is Cole Hamels throwing 130 pitches in a 4-0 game

Jesus, Sandberg. Not that it should matter, because it's a poor managerial move regardless, but didn't he have some sort of arm/shoulder trouble going into the year?

He missed the first month of the season due to shoulder issues and has made 9 starts since then. These games include a 133 pitch outing(career high) and back to back games with 125 pitches. Sandberg also had Roberto Herandez throw 99 pitches in a start on May 9th and then come back on May 11th to try and save a game. Cliff Lee has made 10 starts this year, in 8 of those he has thrown at least 100 pitches. In 4 of them has thrown 114 or more including a 128 pitch outing on April 16th. His pitch counts over his last 7 starts. 128,113,89,106,100,114,116.

The rest of it is idiotic, but I don't see a big problem with Lee's usage. He had one outlier in that string and the rest have been pretty reasonable. I'm glad he's not here though.

This. The pitch counts are a little high, but it's not like Dusty Baker high.

I mean just look at this...

131, 129, 109 (in 5.2 IP), 124, 131, 133 (Out of 30 starts that year, only had 4 starts under 100 pitches and 3 of those were 95, 95, and 97)

125, 120, 122, 114 (6 IP), 125, 122

118, 113, 119, 129, 91 (4.2 IP), 96 (5 IP)

The last 6 starts for Prior, Wood, and Zambrano (in that order) in 2003. Pretty much the only way you had less than 90 pitches with Baker as your coach were either you had your 1st start coming from injury or you didn't make it out of the 3rd.

What's with Schowalter's fascination with batting his best hitter 5th? Davis last year, now Cruz this year.

Maybe better chances of getting more runners on for them to drive in? That's my best guess because you could make a case for the 5th batter having more chances to be in RBI situations than the 3rd or 4th hitters in the lineup.

What the hell is Machado's problem this weekend? He drastically overreacts to being tagged by Josh Donaldson and causes benches to clear Saturday, and Josh Donaldson to get beaned in the same game, and now on Sunday he hits A's catcher Norris in the back of the head twice on follow through, the second time knocking him out of the game. He then proceeds to strike out and fake swing/throw the bat towards 3B. He's got to be facing a decent length suspension.

Machado is an amazing player though.

I can't help but think Baez may do a lot of dumb stuff like that when he comes up. Just from reading his about his personality.

Potentially hot take: Manny Machado is basically Luis Valbuena plus a fluky UZR at 3B for one year.
Posted

the defensive difference hasn't exactly been monumental, either

Valbuena as a Cub (12-14):

3B UZR/150: 19.1

Machado career (12-14):

3B UZR/150: 23.4

though it should be noted, DRS doesn't see them as being remotely comparable (+7 vs +42), so who knows

Lonnie Chisenhall is younger than Mike Olt.
