I despise the Yankees, but the moment when Rivera was taken out of the game tonight was pretty freaking awesome. One of the best scenes on a baseball diamond I can remember seeing.

agreed. yankees did the send-off perfectly (well, besides having him close out a world series game). i always admired the way he went about things - seemed like nobody ever had a bad word to say about him. even red sox fans, who hate everyone associated with the yankees, seemed to have a lot of respect for him.

leaving out his rookie year, when he was mostly a starter, he had 11 seasons with an ERA under 2.00 and only 7 over 2.00. as a reliever, batters hit .207/.257/.284/.541 against him. pretty damn good.

Admittedly, I'm ignorant on the whole issue other than googling articles that don't say much, but an old college friend of mine from The South is convinced that Mo had his pool set up to electrocute as a way to kill failed dogs or rooster from fighting. Either way, I think it's kind of really stupid to have an electrified swimming pool, especially considering the 2 relatives that died from it.

So basically what I'm saying is, 2nd ballot.

The more I think about it, the more brilliant I'm convinced this wild card setup is.

A couple of elimination games to start things off (and an extra one this time) is the perfect way to kick off the postseason. It's like that first weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what to make of that - thought it was a little gimmicky. But it's a cool way to start the playoffs, with the added bonus of giving an advantage to the team with the best record.

OldHossRadbourne just wrote an article for FoxSports. That eliminates Keith Law, who I've always thought ran that Twitter account? Who the hell could it be?

I believe that name was from an early FJM post. I thought it was Shur himself, but it's probably Yang or King

Were you channeling David Thorne here, because I loved it.

It's lawsuit Friday!

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/story/_/id/9769100/albert-pujols-los-angeles-angels-sues-jack-clark-steroid-accusations

Baseball star Albert Pujols is suing former Cardinals slugger Jack Clark for saying on his radio show that Pujols used steroids.
Clark said during his show on WGNU on Aug. 2 that he knew "for a fact" that Pujols used steroids and performance enhancing drugs. Clark and co-host Kevin Slaten were fired soon afterward.

The lawsuit says Clark's comments are lies that have damaged Pujols' reputation, causing him humiliation, mental anguish and anxiety.

This will probably get settled, but there seems to me to be very little chance Pujols would win this. You have to prove malicious intent to win a slander case.

Matt Harvey will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2014 season.

The Dodgers are starting Kershaw on 3 days rest despite being up 2-1 in the series just so they can have the luxury of closing out the series at home. That seems... unnecessary.

Kevin Towers, [expletive] idiot

But more offensive to him was the fact that, in his mind anyway, Dbacks pitchers didn’t hit opposing batters enough. Really, he said that: "You’d think the GM comes down and makes it a point to talk to the staff about it that at we need to start protecting our own and doing things differently,” he said. “Probably a week later Goldy gets dinged, and no retaliation. It’s like ‘wait a minute.’

“Not that I don’t take any of our guys from a lesser standpoint, but if Goldy’s getting hit, it’s an eye for an eye, somebody’s going down or somebody’s going to get jacknifed."

Towers went on to claim that part of the reason pitching coach Charles Nagy was fired was because his pitchers didn’t hit enough guys. Worth noting, as Rob Neyer noted on Twitter last night, that Arizona’s batters were hit by 43 pitches in 2013 while Arizona’s pitchers hit 60 batters. So apparently he doesn’t want an “eye for an eye.” He wants something more on the order of two eyes.
