Well, the asking price for Johnson is apparently outrageous (especially given that his shoulder is still a question and his velo is down), Shields has been...not good, and Vargas has red flag h/r splits. Johnson and Shields will remain under team control beyond this year, but not cheaply (and again, Johnson is question mark to some extent).

Maholm isn't on the same tier as Garza, Dempster, Shields, etc., so I regard him differently. For the remainder of this season, I see Dempster as the best bet to help a team down the stretch, with Garza/Johnson in the same area when taking everything into account (JJ clearly has more upside, but I'm far more confident in Garza's health). Shields took a big step forward last year, but he's taken a big step back this year, which makes his 2011 look like the outlier.

So I guess what I am saying is that at the end of the day, even after all the crap that has gone in over the bast 5 days, I think our guys are as attractive as any to a contender.

If I had to pick our best bets for each, I'd say LA or Atlanta for Dempster obviously. For Garza, I'd say LA or Toronto, and Maholm would be Baltimore or Washington.. Don't see Boston buying and really can't see them or the Cards possibly taking even a slight chance of getting screwed with Garza. Texas seems to want more of an ace. I guess Atlanta would be my 3rd choice on Garza, maybe even KC, to get a jump on next year, where I figure they'll be in buy mode over the winter and if Garza misses a few starts, it doesn't matter as much.

Here's my question with Texas: they want an ace type, but with Hamels and Greinke out of play, is there really one left? Johnson is only one of the remaining lot with an "ace" profile, but he has the aforementioned issues. Not to mention Miami's asking price. Daniels was unwilling to surrender Olt even for Greinke, who while not under control beyond this year, is much less of a gamble than JJ.

And with Lewis down for the year, L.A. having added Greinke and Oakland playing possessed, I don't think they can afford to do nothing.

This is kind of a last gasp for them, if they lose Napoli and Hamilton, which is possible. I think they'll wind up paying up for Johnson, but only after they've attempted to get Cliff Lee, possibly even dangle Profar in a King Felix deal. But I don't see them getting either. Then Texas probably overpays Miami with Olt and one of Perez or Buckel.

Besides trading Johnson, Baker, and Camp for non-prospects.

If only Hendry was still here, we'd have made all these fantastic trades by now.

Would have probably been helpful if the Dodgers hadn't won their last 3 games in a row, against the team they are chasing.

Kershaw had a comebacker hit him on the wrist during his start today. Was wishing like crazy he broke it.

The Score is currently ripping Dempster for his handling of this. Interesting to hear some of his comments and then compare those to his actions.

They mentioned his saying earlier this year that he appreciated everything the team and the fans had done for him, and that he wouldn't be a guy that stands in the way of the future of the organization....

Then they mentioned that he has come out and said "he never said he didn't want to go to Atlanta, that he just needed to look over the situation. Which the reporters basically said was a flat out lie.

They both seem to be pretty off base right now.

The other interesting topic was what would the reception for Dempster be if he takes the mound for the Cubs on Tuesday after the deadline. I hope they boo him mercilessly.

I'm sure we will never hear the full story, but Dempster has lost quite a bit of the good will that he had built up with the fans over the years. It is unfortunate that the Atlanta trade leaked prior to be finalized.

I really sounds like it shouldn't have been a problem.

The consensus was there is no way that the FO did not have a list of teams he was willing to be traded to. They still have to get his official ok, but they had to have thought it was a formality if they already had a list.

I don't understand exactly why he wouldn't just go to Atlanta.

They are in the thick of the race, and barring a collapse like last year, they should at least get a WC

He is a free agent. He can go anywhere he chooses then.

He has basically 9 weeks of season left- half of that would be played on the road anyway.

so 4.5 more weeks away from home.

He could throw well on a big stage and up his value greatly.

Heyman just tweeted that "Beckett may approve #braves, players love braves (except dempster)"

salt in the wound.

But would the Braves want him? He hasn't been terrible, but he hasn't been very good (his k/9 is way down). Plus he's owed a ton of money, which may be an issue for Atlanta. And he's a perpetual injury risk.

If Beckett stays healthy he should perform at roughly Garza's level. He'll cost more than Garza over those two years but there won't be the long term commitment that comes with Garza. It would depend on what the Red Sox would want in return. If the Red Sox would eat a little salary and the prospect packages offered were equal, I'd probably pick Beckett over Garza.

Long term commitment with Garza? Garza is a FA after 2013, Beckett is signed through 2014.
