Heyman just tweeted that "Beckett may approve #braves, players love braves (except dempster)"

salt in the wound.

But would the Braves want him? He hasn't been terrible, but he hasn't been very good (his k/9 is way down). Plus he's owed a ton of money, which may be an issue for Atlanta. And he's a perpetual injury risk.

If Beckett stays healthy he should perform at roughly Garza's level. He'll cost more than Garza over those two years but there won't be the long term commitment that comes with Garza. It would depend on what the Red Sox would want in return. If the Red Sox would eat a little salary and the prospect packages offered were equal, I'd probably pick Beckett over Garza.

Long term commitment with Garza? Garza is a FA after 2013, Beckett is signed through 2014.

Yeah, I didn't explain that very well. I was trying to give Beckett some additional value for having two years left on his contract versus one year of Garza. In order to have Garza a second year, you would have to sign him to a long term deal that will last well beyond two years.

Given Beckett's on again, off again performance history, injury history and salary, I think the extra year is just as much a deterrent as it is a perk, especially for a payroll minded club.

Meantime, the Cubs-Dodgers talks regarding Dempster trundle along. They're still at it...

It's certainly a risk. But if the Red Sox kicked in $2 million per year, I think it is a risk worth taking. Beckett should be able to perform at a level consistent with a $13.75 million per year contract and offer some chance of upside.

oh that's what he does man. He's in my head bigtime at this point. I look to make sure he's not in the thread, before I try posting an update. Then I rush it, make typos, and usually give up. It's teh internets version of Steve Sax disease.

At least I wasn't the heartless person that sniped you on your own tweet. That was amazing.

Here's what you do if you're that worried about it: keep two windows open, one with the post you're composing, one with the thread. Refresh the thread to make sure you won't be sniped the second before you hit the submit button on your post.

Yeah, that was awesome. He responded while I was on a 2 minute business call, I'm in the minor league thread and see it before Twitter even notified me I had a response.

I post from my phone mainly. That's my main problem. My wife has taken ownership of my Ipad and my laptop has to stay on work-related things.

RT @JimBowdenESPNxm Dodgers could swoop in & be a surprise dark horse on Cliff Lee by offering a package centered around Z. Lee & A. Webster

LOL.

In his entry on Dempster, Brett claims that some sources still see Dempster winding up in Atlanta. Not sure if he means sources of his own or if he's referring to the reports that are out there...

Ultimately, some sources say Dempster still winds up in Atlanta. Talks with the Dodgers are at a stalemate right now, according to some, with the Cubs having asked for 22-year-old pitching prospect Allen Webster, and the Dodgers having said, “pfft, we don’t want Dempster that bad, and you guys don’t have much of a choice here.”

If Cubs call Braves w/ same Dempster deal & have a signed doc from Demp approving it....it could still get done

I would like that. Take a pitcher off the market and eliminate any chance of Demp going to LA. He might be more likely to approve an Atlanta deal at that point and Atlanta might still do the Delgado deal.

Shoots down report of Dodgers interested in Lee

1:00pm: The Dodgers are not in on Lee, hears Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The Rangers consider Lee a long shot.

If the Cubs offer him arb do they still get two picks if he refuses?

One supplemental pick. And that still requires a team to forfeit their own 1st rounder and draft budget that comes with it.

Doesn't that destroy the market for an FA who's been offerred arb?

Yes it does. It's not arbitration though, it's a "qualifying offer" equivalent to the average of the top 120 salaries in the game(currently ~12 million). It's been discussed re: Dempster on and off for about 40 pages now.

Pitching market shrinking a bit. Looks like Marlins are keeping Johnson

The Marlins told teams today they're going to keep Josh Johnson barring something unforeseen, reports ESPN's Jayson Stark.
