They don't know it's them or nobody, and neither do we. It seems implicit, but he didn't veto it immediately, so the door is still open. It would be simple to leverage this as a "Ryan would prefer L.A., and that is why he is waiting; to give you an opportunity to match or approximate their offer. If you don't, he is receptive to Atlanta."

I wasn't referring to the situation we're in right this moment (Demp still deciding) and if that's what raw was talking about then I misunderstood him. I was thinking in terms of if Demp does ultimately reject this trade. Then it's clear - it's the Dodgers or stay with the Cubs and we lose all leverage in the process.

There is no way I let him pitch again befpre the deadline. Forget him starting tomorrow for us, with him supposedly "thinking" about things. Garza is already pushed back til Monday and that's if things go well with him. So, finding a team willing to trade for a guy who may or may not have even pitched over the last two weeks is suspect at best.

Dempster becomes our best chip, by default. And him waiting now, while Johnson, maybe Hamels, maybe Greinke, maybe Shields or whoever else comes onto the market just decreases his value even more. It may be complicated, there may be more to it: But the fact is Dempster made mention of making sure the Cubs could get the best return for him. He didn't have to say that. No one asked him to say anything, he said it on his own. And now, he's acting like it's such a huge decision, when in reality, he's had 2 months to think about all of this already, with all the different scenarios.

He's forcing us to trade him to LA, point blank. Which is fine, other than the fact that if the FO knew this, they would have taken their offer from a few days ago and we'd be over this mess. Instead, it's likely we've lost whatever little leverage we had, because they've got to be thinking it's us or nobody right about now.

So if greinke pitches well tonight, do we lose Delgado to the crew? Because that would be extra annoying to me.

I can't imagine that the Braves aren't already aware that Greinke is a better pitcher than Dempster.

Might as well change the thread title to "someone else robs Braves of Delgado and Dempster remains a Cub or is traded to LA for LA's 20th best prospect".

That's true, considering the thread is already full of baseless conjecture.

While I understand that Dempster wants to take his time, he has to understand that the Cubs front office will be upset with him, the Braves front office will be upset with him and Cubs fans will as well.

I hope this doesn't happen, but if Theo & Jed aren't able to move him by the deadline what do you think happens? Do you think there will be any repercussions for Dempster from Theo & Jed?

I wonder if Demp is "taking his time" in hopes that the Braves call off the deal or make another deal so that he won't look like the bad guy. He denies responsibility and then he pretty much has to be dealt to LA which is the only place he seems to want to go.

What can they do really? Sit him? I don't think that's likely.

if they call of the deal he's the bad guy anyway at this point. I really rather they didn't trade him at all if they are forced into dealing him to LA they won't get any kind of value for him anyway.

As far as I'm concerned he can sit. I have no problems with guys not wanting to move, but when Demp is talking about how he's willing to be traded and do what's best for the club, that's a completely different story.

They can let the people in this thread throw rotten vegetables at him. Even that's too good for him, this is 2012.

The cubs don't offer him arby and he then faces the possibility of signing a 2 yr deal with teams other than LA or us

I know he is a reasonable man. But this is all based on speculations (or reports) that he was very much OK with Atlanta as a destination. I'm hoping the reasonable side of him comes through and accepts a trade to Atlanta (a well run team and contender) before it severely hurts the Cubs prospects. The word was he wanted a really good player coming back as part of his legacy. Delgado is exactly that. Someone we can root for, for 5+ years.

No. This is his right to do what he wants. What do you think Theo and Jed will pout and give him a mean look everytime they see him?

And now the cats out of the bag that he doesn't want Atlanta, so our offer from the Dodgers will even be worse. Thanks Ryan.

Stop it. They didn't trade him last time for a shitty offer, I hardly think they will trade him this time for a worse than shitty offer.

I can't help wondering if the Cubs FO knew all along that Demp would only accept a trade to LA and were simply playing other suitors for leverage. To go a bit further, if Atlanta suspected as much, they could've designed this leak to ascertain the truth.
