LaHair in LF would be vomit inducing. He's a 1B/DH as a major leaguer. How do you look at that body type and his movement skills and think "OFer?"

It would not end well. Hell, it probably wouldn't start well. It's begging for trouble

If its such a big deal experiment this year while the team is expected to suck. Just so everyone learns that this just will not go well.

Doesn't really matter if he hits well enough. That's a big if, though.

It does if they want to improve defensively.

Even then to ask a guy who's basically 30 and not very athletic to do that you're increasing his chances of getting hurt. Nothing about this says good idea.

Except if he can hit, he's probably providing more value than our current left fielder or anyone else in the organization.

So now LaHair is more valuable than Castro?

I might be wrong, but I think he means more valuable than any other left fielder in our organization. I hope that's what he means, at least.

Yeah, I thought that was clear-ish.

I thought it was pretty clear from context, but if it was ambiguous, I apologize.

I meant he'd be more valuable in left field than Soriano or anyone other organizational LF option.

Sorry Kyle, I'm pretty sure Castro would be more valuable as a LF than LaHair

Given the defensive difference, BJax might be able to provide more value in LF.

BJax/Upton/DeJesus would be a pretty fantastic defensive OF.

don't get my hopes up.

I don't think that's likely in the near future. Considering how cognizant of Jackson's bust potential you have been in the past, I have trouble believing that you really do either.

Three guys who would be in CF for a whole bunch of teams would be pretty sweet to havw in one OF. Hamels/Garza/Dempster/Shark/Bodies doing the pitching would be nice to go with it.

Obviously the "might" in my post is reliant on him approaching ceiling instead of busting.

A scenario which is far from guaranteed, especially short term. Well, in either situation the more valuable configuration is probably to have Jackson displacing Campana in center while LaHair plays left.

This seems like as good of a place as any to put this. I went to cubs.com to check who the Brewers were pitching this series and saw the subhead "Will Rizzo be on the corners" on the main page. I then made the mistake of clicking on the link, which brought me to Muskat's mailbag and the following question.

With Ian Stewart off to a bad start, could Rizzo be called up to play third base? They could leave Bryan LaHair at first against lefties and use Jeff Baker at third.

-- Stanley B., Gulf Breeze, Fla.

i love that almost all the questions she picked could be answered on google. this is also pretty great:

How many bunts have been attempted this season by the 2012 Cubs Spring Training bunt tournament champion, DeJesus? I don't think it's been that many. Why hasn't he laid down more?

-- Mike C., Peoria, Ill.

Good question.

Even the best defensive OFs need a great defensive guy on the bench.

I also like how this nickname can be modified (à la Lionel Hutz) to refer to his prodigious HR and strikeout rates:

In Play? No! Out.

But that nics already taken by Ian Stewart.

No, that would be: In Play? Yes! Out.

I am curious to see if other teams will handle Lahair like the Brewers did over the weekend, I don't recall many FBs in the zone and just beat him to death with breaking balls.
