Sources: negotiations between #Cubs & rooftops have revived, with the team taking a harder stand, confident in better legal/$ position.

And they're more confident now based on what?

Tickets go on sale soon and confidence about taking a harder stand is the best thing they could come up with to drive excitement.

OR maybe they're more confident now based on a stronger position in their favor from the city?

MESA, Ariz. -- With the backdrop of a new $84 million spring training facility with the support of Mesa mayor Scott Smith, Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts expressed hope Wednesday that the team could reach a resolution with the Wrigley Field rooftop owners.

...

“I don’t think anything, in particular, happened," Ricketts said. "I think we’re just working through ideas that might work for everyone.

"The key is look at this place here. When people work together, and they really focus on what they can accomplish together, you see great results. This is a great example of that.’’

Article kind of sounds like a "We might as well just talk positively about Wrigley since we are here opening the new stadium and it is supposed to be a festive environment."

Bernstein expanded on his Tweet on air.

Says the Mayor has put pressure on Tunney to put pressure on the rooftops and that the Cubs feel stronger than ever in their position in this. Says they aren't going to try to play the good neighbor anymore because that hasn't gotten them anywhere. Says the meetings have been hindered by one particularly obnoxious rooftop owner making things difficult who doesn't "get it" in terms of the big picture of what little leverage they have and what will happen if they don't come to agreement with the team.

I think I got that more or less right...hopefully someone else heard it too and can get/correct anything I missed or screwed up.

OK. That sounds like the Cubs "new confidence" actually should read "finally grown a pair".

Or it's "Rahm is sick of waiting and is putting his foot down with the rooftops" which is more how I read it

Rahm's been putting his foot down for a couple years already. This is something Ricketts has to get done, not the mayor's office.

How about "We know it's too late to to spend any real money on the project this offseason, so it's safe to stop pretending the rooftops are holding it up"?

Not sure if srs but the whole "they don't have the money to start construction right now" angle is hilarious.

That's sure not what the reports are saying.

It's just like "Epstein wants to live out his all-homegrown fantasy." Not serious, unless it turns out that it's true later, in which case I meant it all along.

Reports? Dan Bernstein is just retelling a slightly different version of a story we've heard a million times. And since when do these "reports" mean anything?

If your argument is that City Hall has no say in this and that resolving this is completely going to be left in the Cubs' hands, I'll just say I completely disagree with you and leave it at that.

In what way is it hilarious? The most logical conclusion about the delay is the Cubs have made a decision to stall.

My argument is that city hall has been supportive of the Cubs the whole time and it hasn't done a damn thing to get the project started.

rofl, that's where my mind went too...i forget what detail i read/heard bernstein mention about this one owner that made me think it wasn't her, though.

EDIT - I think I heard that it was a Waveland owner. Which one(s) does Murphy own?

No really. He just doesn't hav the Daily clout. I think what has been going on is the Cubs fear of a law suit in an unfriendly legal environment. I think they have the money so I don't buy Kyle's line ether.

Goony, you've lost all concept of logic if you really think that. They may have made a decision to stall because of lawsuit potential, but there's not even a bit of an inkling that they would stall this project because of a lack of funds. Not extend payroll, yeah, maybe, but they're not so broke they can't start the renovations.

Like a payroll cut in half?

They've chosen to wait it out just like they chose the easy way out by tanking to stockpile picks. They obviously have the money but not the willingness to spend it. The funds have not been made available.

They have to start the renovations with the advertising, what does that tell you about their finances?

I'm not kidding at all when I say this is Papa Joe's money and the kids brought him one thing to invest in, while it's turned into something else. The kids do NOT have the cash available to do this without him relenting. And considering he's not even a sports fan and he likely sees the end result in them eventually getting their way-He's not going to.
