Stern is such a [expletive] prick

Ignoring his rude responses, he did have a good point about all of the possible conspiracy theories. Leading up to the Draft Lottery, all I kept hearing on sports radio was, "we will know this lottery is fixed when the Nets win it." The only other option I heard was "the league will want to pay back Michael Jordan by giving him the first pick." No one said the Hornets. Then as soon as they won, everyone knows it is a conspiracy. The hornets conspiracy theory probably does make the most sense--getting someone to buy the team on the promise of the #1 pick. But people will find a way to think it is a conspiracy no matter what.

I wasn't saying he was a prick for what he said, just his tone and overall pompous attitude whenever he's interviewed. He's a smug asshat. I've headr him interviewed by other media members about all sorts of NBA related topics, he's been on with Simmons a few times and he's just an [expletive].

I definitely didn't think you meant it like that. I guess I didn't need to quote you. I guess I did because I agreed he was being a jerk with his responses.

Last year, everyone was afraid of the Heat dynasty. OKC is now looking like they have the makings of one.

OKC has looked like they have the makings of one for three years. They haven't snuck up on anyone.

Is that why they were 3 to 1 to win the championship when both series were 2-2 when I was in Vegas last week? Miami and SA were closer to 1 to 1.

Vegas odds aren't always, or even usually, indictive of likely outcomes more often they mirror where the general public's money is going or not going

If there was such a big discrepancy between likely outcomes and where the public is putting their money then it would be way easier than it is to consistently make tons of money gambling on sports.

That said I thought those odds were ridiculous and was tempted to bet even though I never do.

i thought jim rome was the one who came off as a moron in that interview. stern was pretty funny.

Rome is a moron. How did he think Stern would react to that question?

If anybody even dreamed of suggesting the NFL did something to alter its competitive balance on air to Goodell, they would be in serious professional trouble and I would guess NFL Security would follow him around or something. I dont think Goodell even does unscripted live interviews. ESPN pumps the cult of personality out except Goodell is more of a khrushchevian thug with zero consistency apart from a preference for whites.

Say what you will about stern but hes overseen a tremendous, worldwide growth in popularity for the sport and I think has pretty much done a good job through some challenging environments while maintaining fairness to the players. He goes on Rome to promote his league and knows hes gonna have to deal with some BS and he deals with it.

He dealt with Billy Hunter for a longtime. Remember when he said "I know where the bodies are buried" to Hunter, im positive he was saying "dont keep being a jackass or i will leak to the press that you use the NBAPA are personal petty cash fund for you and your family".

Anybody that would suggest the NBA would rig a lottery to pump the value of the league owned team knows absolutely nothing about valuation. The #1 overall pick vs the #2 overall pick in a deep draft without a Lebron James type is a rounding error in the sale of a team (if any needle movement at all). The fact that the league negotiated a great labor deal and then had a hugely successful season is why they flipped the Hornets for a gain. Not securing the #1 pick.

Wow that's a whole lot of dumb.

People say that stuff about the NBA and not the NFL because there has been a whole bunch of things to make people think the NBA does that stuff and nothing to indicate the NFL does.

i can't believe there are people defending rome by claiming that was a legit question. give me a break.

"hey commissioner, did you engage in maybe the biggest sports fraud/crime/scam of all time so that the league could profit directly from getting the hornets the #1 pick? HEY PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW?"

http://deadspin.com/5914370/no-matter-who-wins-the-nba-draft-lottery-is-fixed

If Charlotte wins the first overall pick in tonight's draft lottery, it'll be because the association wants Michael Jordan to succeed and the Bobcats to draw in a market the NBA desperately wants to stay in. If Washington wins the lottery, it'll be because Ted Leonsis's son is the team's rep, and the NBA loves having young kids and old widows win. If Cleveland wins a second straight No. 1, it'll be because the league wants to amply reward them for getting screwed by LeBron. If New Orleans wins, it'll be a thank-you to Tom Benson for buying the Hornets. If the Kings win, it'll be a ploy to keep the Maloofs in Sacramento. If the Nets win, it'll help persuade Deron Williams to stay and Dwight Howard to come and create an instantly competitive team for its Brooklyn debut

What exactly is wrong with asking a question? Bill Simmons brings it up every time he talks to Stern.

"Hey commissioner, were you involved in the cover-up on the Bison Dele murder?" "Just asking a question here"

It's not a random question out of nowhere, it's a question on a topic that people discuss all the time. And a topic that Stern has heard discussed all the time.

Would you be ok with a journalist asking Obama about 9-11 being an inside job?

I'm just amused that there are a lot of people out there who think Rome is/was a wife beater because they aren't familiar with the phrase.

Agreed, but I don't really understand how stern's question was the appropriate response. As the article mentions, this wasn't really a loaded question. Answering the wife-beater question with a yes or a no implies you have beaten your wife. The thing about Rome's question was that he was giving Stern the opportunity to say no, and give reasons why it is a ridiculous thought. One thing that annoys me about Rome is that his interviews almost have a narrative that he controls--basically answering his own question while he asks the question... but he also generally is very favorable to his guests (Jim Everett notwithstanding). It is a stupid question in the fact that Stern obviously isn't going to admit to anything, but he was giving him an opportunity to shoot it down and explain why thinking so is stupid.

Harden is 4-6 for 14 points so far tonight. The rest of the Thunder are 4-21 for 11 points.

So many missed open jumpers by the Thunder.

This is frustrating....everytime OKC makes a run to get within 9-10, the crowd starts getting loud but the Thunder miss a couple shots, or turn the ball over, or miss a couple FTs and its back to 15 again. I think they've played this game since midway through the 2nd quarter. I keep waiting for the Thunder to get back in it.
