Pujols was the top of the heap; it made sense for him and his agent to set the market, not let it be set for them. Now that you have the big names gone Fielder and Boras can take their time to get the deal they want. There's no reason for them to rush anything.

I get it, just don't necessarily agree with the approach.

I don't really get what makes you think this is dragging on forever. Inevitably one or two of the bigger free agents lasts deeper into offseason than the rest.

Agreed, and sometimes that makes some sense (Maddux in 04' comes to mind). I don't think it does in this case; just my humble opinion.

Carry on.

Kaplan just posted a Breaking News article that I can't link from my phone, but says we're going to do a total rebuild, not serious players on Fielder, etc. Probably worth starting a new thread on, even if it IS Kaplan.

A look at the current makeup of the Cubs roster shows a handful of big contracts that the Cubs are having trouble trying to move despite their willingness to eat significant portions of the remaining dollars. From Alfonso Soriano to Carlos Zambrano, to Ryan Dempster, the Cubs have approximately $50 million tied up in players who do not figure to be a part of their future when they are ready to win.

TWO OF THOSE GUYS ARE GONE AFTER THE NEXT SEASON.

God [expletive] dammit.

And since they won't be winning next year, they won't be part of the team that eventually does win.

Yeah, I read that article...

In short, his sources are employees of other teams who think we should be starting a complete rebuild. There's nobody in the Cubs org telling him we will.

Kapman is worthless. However, the growing trend is that we are not even serious about the bigger names/talent this offseason. My frustration is centered around an approach that all of our current good talent (outside of Castro) is on the market and in return we have gotten ZERO in return. The only thing positive about DeJesus is his wife and Ian Stewart can't hit a ball out of the infield jn Coors.

lol no

DeJesus will be anywhere from a solid to a very good offensive player and will be very good defensively.

I wish people would stop poopooing that signing.

Kaplan is saying these are not external sources he's hearing this from. Internal guys have told him this and everyone other than Castro is available. He's putting himself pretty far out on a limb if he's wrong.

I hope the limb breaks.

Over a shark tank.

I'm ok with this so long as the returns are good.....

.......both the re-build and Kaplan fallling into a shark tank.

Didn't he get burned pretty hard over a premature report during the Theo stuff?

Nothing wrong with having a bat like DeJesus in the lineup, especially at the price we got him for. However, when he's likely to be the 3rd or even 2nd best hitter in your lineup depending on what we get out of Soto this year, then you're in trouble.

ok, i can get through this.

Bulls and Blackhawks, you must at least get to your sports championship round for the next 3-4 years. Bears, you must add something new and exciting each year so that I can get excited to watch youtube videos of you practicing during training camp. The only gap I will have is from ~June 15-July 15th when bears camp starts. Then it will be mild excitement until the first week of September. Thankfully, I've had practice with pretending that sports don't exist from June to September the last couple of years.

Can't wait to see what attedance is like in September next year.

(all this said, I am all for a total rebuild if that's what happens. I just choose to ignore the product on the field for a couple of years.)

How is this "breaking news"? Theo has been dumpster diving for the last few weeks and has offered to trade anyone that anyone will take (except Castro). As for Fielder, any of you posters who think we've been serious bidders have been smoking something.

If we're going to do it, I hope we just *really* do it. Garza, Marshall, Byrd should all be gone by next trading deadline.

I really want some of what the Yankees could give us for Garza.

Yup...unless you try to buold a rotation around Garza. Get rid of everyone except him and lock Matt up with an extension for the next five years. That puts your no. 2 starter in place for when you are ready to win.

Now with that much money already committed you have a 71 win team from 2011 that has lost one of its top power bats in Carlos Pena and has only added David DeJesus and Ian Stewart which cannot at this point be considered major additions to the roster.

i like how he makes a point to not mention ramirez as if "oh yeah, i guess they lost him, but he was so bad, it's not even worth mentioning."

Backtobanks criticizing other posters for having what he feels are unrealistic expectations of who will end up on our roster...

Hmmm...

it's especially egregious in light of the fact that the reason you have to call pena "one of" the cubs' top power bats instead of just the top power bat is because of aramis.

I find it hilarious that so many on this board thought Rogers, Rosenbloom, etc. were idiots because they've been suggesting the Cubs go for a complete rebuild since last year.

"How stupid Rogers is. Teams with payrolls the size of the Cubs don't need to rebuild!"

Everyone was dying for Epstein to take over. And now that he has, we're doing a rebuild. Absolutely classic.
