Sources: Cutler broken thumb; likely out rest of reg season

I like me some Kyle Orton, but he doesn't know Martz's system at all. How could we expect him to pick it up in time for it to matter?

Not only does he lack experience in the system, but it doesn't cater to him either. He doesn't have much of an arm and is immobile. He would do nothing but throw 5 yard slants and dump offs.

It was nice seeing Cutler get out on some boots and things like that this Sunday. Do the same with Hanie and use his athleticism and cut down on his reads.

We WILL move the ball with Hanie. Book it.

Use a lot of screens and short passes to get Hanie settled in. Oakland doesn't have an efficient pass D, mostly just pass rushers, and the Bears can take advantage of that.

I don't even think we'll have the chance to get him. There are probably a few teams out there that like Orton better than their current starting QB. Doesn't the system work in a way that they go in order by record and each team has a chance to claim him, and if no one does all 32 teams can get him?

If that's the case, even if we were dead set on acquiring him, you are hoping teams like the Chiefs, Vikings, Redskins, Seahawks and Titans don't make a claim. And I don't know who has a higher priority between the Texans and Bears since they both have the same record, but the Texans would probably consider putting a claim on him.

Even if the Bears brought Orton in, I'm sure he would still be the backup behind Hanie. 1st because as mentioned he doesnt know Martz's offense, and also because I think the Bears really do like Hanie and want to see how he performs. Any QB we bring in, including Orton, would be for emergency only.

I say the chances of landing Orton are somewhere around 10-15%

For any QB to be effective in the Bears system, they'd have to at least either be able to move or release the ball quickly. Orton does neither, so...no thanks.

To be fair, Kurt Warner was almost completely immobile and ran the Martz offense to perfection. And obviously, Martz doesn't mind immobility as he hand-picked Nathan Enderle to draft, and he can't run a lick.

Right, but Warner could throw. Orton can't throw, and he's immobile. It's not that Martz demands mobility, but surviving with this line requires mobility, and thriving under Martz requires an arm.

orton can throw, he just doesn't have a quick release and martz's offense requires the QB to go under center almost exclusively, so his problem with doing the grapevine would hurt him. can't wait to see him with a bottle of jack at a local establishment, though.

Orton is better than every other option out there, not sure why some are against it.

He's been worse than Tarvaris Jackson, Donovan McNabb and Kerry Collins this year. And I don't see anybody scrambling to sign Collins.

He's barely been better than Tim Tebow, for Theo's sake.

Orton's arm pale's in comparison to Cutler's, but it's not fair to say the guy can't throw the ball. I would be happy to have him as a back up going forward. It's all but impossible for him to jump right into the Martz offense though.

You would really take Jackson over Orton?

He can't throw the way you need to be able to make this offense work. Orton spreads the ball around to multiple receivers in short patterns. He's not going to hit on the 18 yard ins, and he sucks on the deep ball.

Collins isn't available. The Colts have him on IR and technically have him under contract for next year (but there's no way they're paying him 10 million next year).

Looking at Orton's numbers this year is probably a little underrating him, but between his mediocre play and his poor fit for Martz's offense I would be wary of him too.

I'd much rather have Tebow.
