So Theo says that Svuem demands that his players respect the game and play it the right way. I expect all of you who bashed Sandberg for saying the same to bash Theo now.

Knowing what we know about Theo, we know Theo is pandering. I don't have any knowledge of Ryno that would lead me give him the same benefit of the doubt.

That and Theo's definition of "the right way" is likely much, much different from Sandberg's.

I honestly don't think Epstein is pandering, I think he really believes it. But he also knows how much he values it.

There's a difference between wanting guys to play hard and intelligently, and deciding that "fundamentals" are why a team loses when they actually just suck.

yea, I didn't feel completely comfortable with what I said there, hence my edit.

This whole "culture change" thing has been driving me nuts the more I realize that the people saying it have a vastly different idea of the culture change that is and has been necessary with the Cubs.

The culture change is in the front office. There's nothing "cultural" about crappy players. They weren't bad because of effort or anything like that. They've been bad because they suck. They've sucked because our front office sucks.

Sveum needs to learn to answer questions like this. Be succinct. Give one or two cliches and move on.

I agree, "Culture change" has more or less been interpreted by every Cubs fan and member of the media as "Theo says he'll do what I want them to do."

I think ultimately it's about fighting for every edge. I keep coming back to Sveum supposedly being dogged about information-based fielding shifts. That's a small edge that takes a lot of work, and it's one I can't imagine a Hendry-led Cubs team fighting for.

Real culture change:

Stop being idiots, start paying attention to modern objective baseball analysis. Stop focusing on the wrong issues and start focusing on what matters.

The general interpretation of culture change:

We need more guys who ground out but run really hard when they ground out. Stop swinging for the fences. Be more aggressive. Bench people who make an error. Throw around platitudes. Play every game during the day on WGN.

Pretty much exactly this.

I gotta admit, Sveum's comments about body language in managers after the interview and today are really bizarre.

Just remember: his nickname "Nuts" didn't come from his lower half!

I hate the Chicago media so much.

I'd love to hear about his philosophies on lineup construction. I'd love to hear more about his reputation for being aggressive with defensive shifts. I'd love to hear his response to those who say he was a terrible third-base coach. I'd love to hear him talk about his philosophy on managing a pitching staff, especially given his background as a hitters' guy.

Instead, we get crossing enemy lines...har har...culture change derp derp ... nickname "nuts" tsss.

Sveum with the old 60 wins, 60 losses, and other 42 quote.

You hate the mainstream sports media so much, really.

There's no town whose local media would ask questions like that.

If anything, I feel like we're slightly better off than most...there are a couple of younger guys on ESPNChicago who would ask stuff like that if given the mic.

There's that guy Sahadev Sharma who has asked decent questions when given the opportunity.
