I like it. I hadn't even thought of it as a possibility, but it makes sense.

Really?

Yep. Makes way more sense for them than any other realistic option, without painting them into a corner for the future.

Continuity is the biggest thing here, I think. Smith was on the Arkansas staff a year ago, so he's familiar with the current players and coaches. He'll probably keep a lot of the stuff intact and keep things familiar for everybody. I question his ability to coach long-term and Arkansas signing him to a long term deal would be a mistake, but I don't think it's a terrible one-year, interim move. It was probably the best, or nearly the best, of a bunch of bad options at this point.

Correction: not probably. They will be going forward with the same staff. He is extremely well liked by the players, and is only 4 months removed from coaching there originally. He has worked with all of Arkansas's coaches but one. His job is to handle the administrative side of things and let all the assistants do their jobs. There is no illusion that he's a long-term solution, but he is perhaps the best possible bridge to the end of this season, when the hiring options will be exponentially better than they are right after spring ball is over.

Here are some of the rumored Oregon penalties:

4 Years probation

Multi-year Bowl Ban

20+ scholarships lost over 3 years

No out of state recruiting for a year

No in-home visits for Gary Campbell

Wins from 2009-2011 stricken

RB Trophy forfeited

Multiple players ruled ineligible(including Barner, DAT, Clay, Heimuli)

Basketball will be hit even harder from a source within the TyE, who is best friends with prominent Oregon boosters.

Chip demanded guaranteed money if there is a NCAA probation by given and TB said NO

Track and Field will be hit as well

Coordinated offering of sex & drugs/alcohol to recruits is currently being investigated by the EPD.

Register Guard has a story ready to print, as soon as they are close to levying charges

Tommy Rees in jail for felony battery of a police officer?

Apparently flipped when cops were called to the house he was at, ran off and then hit the cop who caught him. Real genius work from him.

I don't follow ND super close, but I'm pretty sure he's supposed to be the starter this year isn't he?

It's a 3-way competition between him, Hendrix and Golson. Rees easily looked the worst of the 3 in the spring game, had 19 turnovers last year and can't run, but Kelly hasn't shown any inclination to get rid of him to this point despite all of that, so conventional wisdom in South Bend (at least according to the Irish Illustrated folks) was that he'd probably be starting regardless. Doubt that's the case now.

Andy this isn't your first rodeo. Did you see the sbpd comments? "It wasn't much but it was enough to consider resist." SBPD hates ND football slightly less than cubinny so you have to take charges with a grain of salt.

Stupid of him either way but he wasn't going Jackie Chan on the cops.

Probably the best thing to happen to ND football this offseason.

The local news pretty much made it sound like he stuck his knee out while being wrestled to the ground and the cop got the wind knocked out of him.

Sounds right. Felony dropped to misdemeanor (making it 4). Probably miss fall camp and maybe a game or 2. Cost himself the starting gig though, which is good for us.
