It bothers me for some reason every time I hear someone say we can wait til the offseason for a better offer for Garza. We said this LAST year when he had 2 years left, saying teams will be more desperate during the deadline (at 1.5 years left) and maybe we could get more. Now we are saying it again, hey no rush we can do it when he has 1 year left. Jesus, at that point just friggen extend him. It's either some team gets desperate NOW, or we extend him. Those are the only options. Sure you can play it as if there is another option for leverage, but in truth it's not there.

The reason we probably have to wait to trade Garza is the uncertainty with regard to his injury and the fact that that won't be resolved until after the deadline.

August 2013: "Some team will get desperate in the waiver trade period, and at that point we'll get our two top-50 + two more deal."

I understand the thoughts on the broken record of "we can do it in the offseason" but we have to get the best deal we can for him. We have no ideas what teams are offering. If they are lowballing because of the question marks then yes, we can and should wait for later. We have that control, which allows them to be a bit pickier with their return. We need to maximize the returns on everyone. It would be silly to trade him for below market value, just so we don't have to use "the wait til next offseason" line.

We have to try to sell as high as possible- Dempster pretty much has to be done for whatever now, but not Garza.

If it does last until the offseason, I think he is gone then for the best deal they can find at that time. I don't think they want a replay of this year with injuries, and certainly don't want to get down to the deadline and have to take anything they can get for him.

Believe me, I want a slam dunk at the deadline. Anything to be excited about is more than welcome! But in the back of my mind, I keep telling myself we have to be patient, get the best deal we can and have faith in the new FO!

Sveum said Garza's bullpen went extremely well.

did they broadcast it? youtube?...iphone? anything

I would have had that on WGN, showing the gun on every fastball! (of course on tape delay in case he sucked.)

@Kevin_Goldstein

Doubtful. RT @davidrelliott: @Kevin_Goldstein chances Garza is dealt by 4pm tomorrow?

Sniped.

I think I've asked him that in 5-6 different forms in the last week. Sure enough, he answered it as soon as I asked. I didn't even bother looking for 30 minutes or so. By the way, I'm hoping the reason we're hearing nothing on this is because we're working a deal with Toronto, who's as tight lipped as we are.

Stark apparently still optimistic?

Jayson Stark @jaysonst

#Cubs still trying to move Matt Garza despite health issues - & think they could. "I'd be surprised if he's not moved," says one exec.

Also, and kinda a duh comment but still...

David Kaplan @thekapman

Shaking hands with his teammates. Also, sources say Garza def. in play after MRI was clean last week.

The best deal is to now extend him. And I was in the trade Garza camp. But only if we could have gotten a teams #1 and #2, + 2 more in the top 20. That didn't happen so now is the time to extend him.

They should not extend him.

It all depends. If he'll sign for 15M a year then I'm game, but if he he wants 18+ then it's time to move him.

I said it earlier but of names out there, if a team is pretty sure this is a mild injury, there is as much or more value in Garza than in Johnson or Lee, etc. Garza will be Garza but those guys may never regain there top form. Texas, for instance, can wait a few times through the rotation for Garza simply because they are 4 games and don't need help urgently, just sooner or later.

Latest Garza tidbit: "Very high chance" he gets traded, says one exec. Jays have been bearing down on him.
