Marlin has a bad feeling Garza won't pitch on Monday. He also called it a noninjury, although it's possible I'm reading too much into that part of it.

Could just be he want's to focus on the birth of his child.

no actually your original thought was "trumbo blows"

and you brought up the pcl. I brought up the fact that ever year when he played at the same level again, his stats went up, and his obp went 20-30 points...when he went to the pcl it went up 70. I thought he usual stats (not including the pcl) of 270-280, 330 obp and 500+ slugging were very possible almost probable.

None of this is true.

Pitchers' families are screwing up our trade deadline. Single pitchers, new market inefficiency?

Joke if you will, but what happens with Matt Garza over the next 4 days is one of the key decisions of Epstein and Hoyer's long term agenda. If they allow Garza to go past the deadline without pitching it suggests that:

A. He is injured and would not be able to pitch anyway

B. there is enough interest in him that teams have expressed willingness to trade for him after a week and a half layoff with nothing more than medical clearence

C. They're OK not trading him

D. With Hamels off the market, the 2013 FA market for starting pitching becomes limited to Zack Greinke and a hand full of decent but not spectacular options (Marcum, Jackson, McCarthy, Sanchez) whose price will rise as a result of Hamels extension and high risks (Peavy, Zambrano). Also, the deadline trade market could suddenly feature Cliff Lee and Josh Johnson in addition to Greinke. With this in mind, they could prefer to take a gamble on waiting until the Winter to trade him.

Well, he has to pass a physical in order for the trade to go through. I wouldn't do it, but if a team that loses out on Greinke, Dempster, maybe Shields and Johnson really wants a potential difference maker, he's about all that's left. I'd still think a team would want more assurance personally, but I guess it's POSSIBLE at least.

I don't think it would keep a team from trading for him because of the extra year on his deal. I do think it would cut down on what a club may offer for him because of the unknown of this year.

We may be better off waiting until the offseason if we can not get the type of haul the Cubs feel we should get.

The team has another year of control, which is different from another year on the deal. This is what makes him more valuable despite his mediocre season. The team could non tender him and let him walk in the offseason, though they wouldn't.

The fact is we need to get something every asset we have. We are so thin, and have so many holes, that we can't allow much to slip through without as much compensation as possible. This is especially true of Garza, who because of the team control, is probably our most valuable asset to be traded. Dempster may be better this year, but as a "rent a player", he potentially won't bring as much as Garza can. I don't see the FO giving away Garza at this time for whatever they have set their sights on. If his current situation gets them offers worse than what an off season deal might bring, I think they'll wait.

MRI shows fluid still in Garza's triceps. Won't pitch until after trade deadline.

Garza had MRI that Sveum said was clean other than some fluid. #Cubs

#Cubs Matt Garza not expected to pitch until late next week. MRI was clean. Says he's feeling better

Can we sign Garza long term for cheaper now?

or will los angeles pull the trigger on a dempster trade since trading for garza isn't feasable at this point?

lol. The whole Dempster saga and now this. When it rains, it [expletive] pours. It's like a bad dream right now.

But keeping Garza is good.
