Alomar already did that.

Maybe Hale is short and that helped us to fulfill the Mickey Rooney rule.

Bruce Levine is doing a live chat on ESPN right now. I found this very interesting.

Who do you think is the current favorite for the cubs manager job?

Bruce Levine

(1:04 PM)

Without any more knowledge than anyone else I would say Francona. Epstein confirmed here that he continues to have conversations with him. Why would he do that unless he was a candidate?

because they are friends? Levine is a moron, I don't think Francona is in the running.

"For all the latest breaking Cubs news that I get from other beat writers, keep it tuned here".

But honestly, Levine is USUALLY pretty solid. However, I can't see Francona getting this gig. Although I hope he does.

He just answered one of my questions. Here is the question and answer.

When do you think that the Cubs will announce their new manager? Before Friday?

Bruce Levine

(1:25 PM)

My guess is by the end of this week or Monday at the latest. There are no more candidates. Any one of the six people mentioned could be their choice. Maddux and Alomar appear to be the strongest two outside of Francona who in my mind is still a viable wild card for the job.

That sounds so out of nowhere. Francona is honestly my preference, I just don't see it happening.

I don't think it is out of nowhere. Theo has mentioned Francona and admitted he's under consideration. I think his talk about not being Boston West (or whatever it was) trumps those statements, but it's not out of nowhere. It has been a chance since the day Boston missed the playoffs and started killing their own.

I'm sure Theo has a lot of friends, but he doesn't talk about them in relation to his managerial search. I think it's obvious Theo and Francona have talked about it. Do I think it will happen? Probably not. But I don't think it's fair to call Levine a moron because he has made some very reasonable deductions.

My guess is, Francona is in the running unless/until one of the other "fresh" candidates impress Theo and Hoyer enough to pass on the known commodity.

It's worth noting that a lot of new people are working in the Cubs front office and which reporter ends up with the best sources is going to take a while to figure out.

I take it that Theo is passively mentioning Tito as a favor of sorts to an old colleague, particularly after the hatchet job that was performed on him by the Red Sox FO on his way out the door. Certainly doesn't help Francona's stock as a manager when his former boss of 8 years publicly says he wouldn't even consider hiring him again.
Posted
How does it help him to say he considered him, but went in another direction?

"He was in a pool of candidates we looked at, and we seriously considered him, but at the end of the day Mike Maddux just absolutely blew us away with as being the right man for this particular situation with his specific expertise."

>>>>>

"Tito Francona? I wouldn't work with that guy again at gunpoint. I'm not saying those drug and booze rumors coming out of Boston are true, I'm just saying I wouldn't even give a second thought to hiring him again. Read into it what you will."

Cubs not doing formal second interviews, apparently

http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7238546/chicago-cubs-second-interview-dale-sveum

MILWAUKEE -- Although the Boston Red Sox will interview Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum for a second time at the general manager meetings, the Chicago Cubs will not do a full-fledged second interview with Sveum, according to a major league source.

The Cubs may have a conversation with Sveum, since he's already at the meetings in Milwaukee, but it will not be a long, drawn-out interview, according to the source.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said on Monday that all of his formal interviews have concluded with five candidates: Pete Mackanin, Sveum, Mike Maddux, Sandy Alomar Jr. and DeMarlo Hale, who had a phone interview. Epstein also has conversations continuing with Terry Francona.

Epstein said he and general manager Jed Hoyer would follow up with some phone calls and conversations with candidates. He also said Monday that he would present his final choice to chairman Tom Ricketts and his family.

If all he cared about was making Francona look good, he probably would have interviewed him to keep up the charade.

I disagree - interviewing him would have given away the fact that it was just a charade. Theo doesn't need to interview a guy he's worked with for years to know how that guy thinks.
