Epstein is gonna get Earl Weaver and I'm gonna be all "is that all? I thought you could do better." And it'll be awesome.

Epstein already has reached out to Mike’s brother, Greg Maddux, in hopes he’ll return next year after working as a special assistant to former GM Jim Hendry.

If Mike Maddux were to become manager, one source close to Greg Maddux believes the future Hall-of-Famer might reconsider his desire to avoid full-time travel and could even agree to work as pitching coach with his brother.

Okay since the Quade thread has been locked I'll just post this here. Not trying to argue, just want to know. I don't know where else to post this.

Like most people here other than Fred I stopped watching the 2010 and 2011 seasons pretty early as Cubs were faltering. Other than the 95-104 record he put up, I don't how how bad Quade really is, or whether he was just given a bad roster. But what were his specific habits that were bad?

Yes. This would be the best thing to happen ever.

Throwing Dempster 120 pitches and 6+ innings regardless of effectiveness .

I didn't pay crazy close attention, but his lineups were obtuse and he handled his pitching staff a bit poorly.

He had two starting pitchers in the Top 30 in MLB in Pitcher Abuse Points (Dempster at #6, Garza at #25), despite the fact that neither was in the Top 30 in MLB for innings pitched. I can understand leaving a guy in past the 100 pitch mark when he's already deep in the game and cruising, but with Quade, it was not unusual to see someone like Dempster pitch 6 IP with 120+ pitches.

On the flip side, he didn't sac bunt or IBB much. I really can't complain a whole lot about Quade aside from the way he handled starting pitching.

I obviously didn't watch them as much as you guys but I swear every time I saw them, Dempster was pitching in the 6th inning at 110 pitches obviously gassed, Koyie Hill was playing, and the lineup could have been drawn out of a hat.

Edit - or what Rob and Outshined said

What are Dave Martinez's qualifications? I know he's been bench coach for Tampa, but I have no idea what a bench coach does. I did have an irrational love for Davey as a player though, even after the left the Cubs.

I didn't even know that was the same Dave Martinez.

Dave Martinez is my first choice. I'd be happy with Sveum or Francona. I'm intrigued by Mike Maddux, although I'd prefer him as our pitching coach. Don't think the Rangers would let him get away for a lateral move, though. In the end, I will trust Theo no matter who he chooses.

Why is everyone so giddy about Maddux as manager?

I don't know.

I don't know.

I don't get either and nobody can give an answer? It's strange, no?

Here's what UK had to say about him in the other thread yesterday...

He does the groundwork for Maddon as far as the prep work and plays a large role in the managerial decisions. He would definitely be a player's manager.

Martinez handles the clubhouse more than Maddon. Maddon lays down the foundation but the players go to Martinez before Maddon.

It is. I'd want Mike Maddux as a pitching coach. I have yet to actually hear an argument as to why he'd make a good manager (other than perhaps the way he'd handle pitchers, which is certainly important, but I'm not sure how much about that can be gleaned from his career as a pitching coach).

Does it really matter who the manager is? How much can a manager actually impact the team?

Welcome to the forum!

Depends. Managers can't do a lot to help the team win. But they can do it harm in both the short term and in the long term. Basically, you want the guy that sucks the least.
