Why is Fielder clearly not coming?

there isn't enough fast food places within walking distance of the ball-park. You have to wait to long for your food at Harry's

Pff...there's a Taco Bell and a McDonalds right across the street. Fat guy heaven.

Dang, haven't been up in a cpl years and when I was, I wouldn't look for a TB. I guess we need to use that particular information to lure him

The .368 happened to be in the PCL, and was 35 points better than he'd ever done before. I just don't see the OBP ever coming around for him.

every level he played at, it went up each year. he showed a slight drop when moving to the next level then improved. Don't know why that wouldn't continue. Also for what we would pay him, he wouldn't be fielder, pujols but he wouldn't be pena either. It would be worth a risk if we don't make a move. The problem is that you don't have many people who have a reason to move a decent up and coming player. They signed the big dog, so unless the think he can play 3rd...some say yes, some say no. Right now we have baker. wouldn't be awful but there also isn't much reason to expect growth. I would rather take a shot on trumbo than drop 10 mil on pena again, although I really liked pena. It just make much sense to pay that much for a guy who is going to hit like that especially when it's not going to be a difference maker.

Are you serious? You don't see any reason why a non-dominant minor league player's OBP won't continue to increase as he enters the major leagues?

So, updated for the latest moves, we have:

Soriano/Byrd/DeJesus (Johnson, Campana)

Stewart/Castro/Barney/LaHair (Baker, Dewitt)

Soto (Castillo)

Garza/Dempster/Zambrano/Wood/Wells

Marmol/Wood?/Samardzija/Cashner/Russell/Castillo/one more guy

Okay, that offense is a gaping hole of suck, but the pitching has some real upside and could be a strength.

If we could get some nice contract years out of Dempster and Z, pitching will be a strenght, but I don't think that it will be anywhere near capable of carrying that offense unless the stars align, Soriano plays like pre 2009, Soto plays like he does in even numbered years, Stewart finally realizes his former top prospect status, LaHair gives us a Ludwick/McGhee type AAAA player year and Byrd and DeJesus round out the lineup going back to being the 3 WAR type players they were at one point.

We have two doubled names right now. I wonder what the record for that is.

Castillo. Lendy the Rule 5 reliever and Welington the catcher.

They briefly had four Carloses (Zambrano, Pena, Silva, Marmol) on the roster last spring, for what it's worth.

I talked about it in the trade thread, but the more I look at Sappelt's record, the more I think he can be a league-average starting LFer in 2012 and be a little better than Soriano.

Soriano can't really be a backup, so you might as well waive him if you can't convince somehow to take him at a very reduced price (though I'm sure someone would).

Doing some back-of-the-napking WAR calculations, and I've got that as a 77-win team, albeit with possibly generous WAR projections for Stewart and LaHair.

I just can't fathom that they would go into the season counting on LaHair as the every day first baseman. Maybe they give him a shot as a bench guy but they have to be too smart to think he is a decent option as a the starter.

We can sit here all day and say the Cubs should do this and that but we don't know about all of the finances even though you think you do on paper. Still have a lot of behind the scenes people to take care of. The Cubs are one of the wealthier teams, top 5. Why not focus less on minor league development and more on free agents like the Red Sox and Yankees?

With Garza talks heating up - I gotta believe Z's coming back for sure, otherwise we're screwed harder than I thought.

It's been obvious for a while that the only solution was to allow Z to come back and try to get some value out of the remainder of that contract. It's the only option for him and the team really. Hopefully the Cubs get a save my career/ contract year out of him and bid Carlos adieu.

Seeing recent moves like signing Sonnanstine also signal that we're not players for guys like Jackson. If its truly gonna be Dempster (3), Z (3), Wells (5) and Wood (5) - lets hope we pick up some innings eater rather than what happended last year. Guys like Coleman - I hope to never see again.

I think Shark gets one last shot at the rotation. Cashner gets work in Iowa. At least one major league ready starter will be coming over in the Garza trade. Might see a Kuroda type signing yet. Maybe not. Rumor mill has Marmol, Soto, Byrd yet to go, so there are options. I wouldn't be looking for a front-line staff next year, but I'm fine with that if that is the price for sustained success for the franchise.

I'm assuming those numbers are meant to be representing the pitcher's abilities, and if so I'd say way off on Wood.

Yea Wood is a 4 at least. I'd say a solid 3 if he has a rebound year.
