Banking on having a large crop of elite FA pitchers to pursue next offseason is looking even more unlikely.....

Evans said he has had "healthy, ongoing dialogue" with the representatives for Matt Cain about an extension, Baggarly reports. MLBTR’s Luke Adams looked ahead to a possible Cain extension last month.

I only count 3 elite arms currently set for FA - Cain, Hamels, Greinke - with Anibal Sanchez as a very good 2nd tier option. After that, a 31 year old Marcum is probably the next best starter. That pitching field is thinning fast.

And I have full faith that Ruben Amaro is going to give Hamels an 8-year $670 million deal

I fully expect Hamels to be re-signed. I'm leaning toward thinking Cain will be extended by the Giants, but I'm not confident in saying that at all. I do think there's a strong likelihood next year's FA class consists of Greinke and Anibal and then a big gap before Marcum and (maybe) an aging Haren.

With the FA pitching market looking like it could thin out fast for next year, the best thing we can hope for is that a lot, or at least a few of, our very intriguing low level guys have breakout years along with the guys at the top of the system (Jackson, Baez, Saczur, etc.) not falling off and keeping their prospect status and Theo/Jed can pull of a trade for King Felix. Pipe dream, I know, but it's what I am hoping for....

this is probably why the cubs should extend garza right now.

I don't know about right now, but if they can't get the package they're looking for by the trade deadline...

I'm starting to suspect Greinke's the best FA pitcher out there next offseason. But, I can see Felix, Timmy, and David Price being shopped. I still think Garza needs to be dealt for a pitching heavy package, including a guy who's as solid abet as a prospect can be anyway, at being his replacement. I also expect the Cubs to draft a pitcher at 6th overall in the draft and probably 3 by the time the 2nd round is over. Probably sign a high ceiling IFA or two as well, before the cap comes into effect.

Hoyer and Theo need to use all their power to land Hamels. All of it.

Oh and I do think he hits FA. I think the Giants might lock up Cain even over Lincecum...

I want no part of Greinke in Chicago

I guess I don't disagree, but I'm kind of surprised you put so much stock in that. It's not like he was pitching in an empty Miller Park this year, but I suppose our media could easily break him.

I disagree with the Grienke can't handle Chicago nonsense. If the Cubs suck the media will get snarky and it would inevitably end poorly, but it's not about going down with class and style. It's about trying to be good, and if the guy can handle pitching in major league baseball he can handle pitching in major league baseball.

Do the Phillies have enough money? I recall something about how they had one of the highest debt loads in the MLB.

He's white. Just have him wear eye black and a dirty uniform.

He's a goofy, stammering man-child. I don't think our media will like him - mental midget, anti-leader, and all that.

as has been covered a million times, it is a completely stupid philosophy to bank on potential FAs being available/signing with the cubs. if you're willing to give hamels a huge contract after 2012, how about just giving garza a huge contract after 2012 (if he's willing) instead of trading him now?

also, the phillies have been overpaying for everybody in sight for the last several years...you really think they're all the sudden going to start with a new philosophy with hamels?

trading garza with the attitude of "it's OK, we'll just sign hamels," makes no sense.

Agreed. I think trading Garza makes sense if you get your socks knocked off, including a near-ready top prospect like Turner. I don't think too many (any) folks here are advocating dumping Garza for a bunch of lotto tix bc some ace will be available.

Alfredo Amezaga to #Cubs on minor-league deal. Currently playing shortstop for Obregon in Mexican League playoffs. #MLB

Looks like Bianchi's replacement.
