I'd put up with LaRussa for a year or two if he brought Pujols for 5 or 6.

Am I misremembering/making too much of it but didn't LaRussa occasionally place blame on Pujols (but not some of the other players) the last season or 2? Is it possible that his leaving StL was conditional for Pujols? I doubt it, but I could also see it.

Going to be interesting to see Theo go head to head against his old team for a manager. Theo has been scouting manager candidates since the season has ended so that's gotta be a good thing.

I don't mind "Player's Managers" to a point-- but Dusty was a Player's Manager and never held anyone accountable for poor play. That's taking it to far. It's fine if you want someone the boys in the clubhouse can like, but you also need someone they aren't going to walk all over, either.

That's not at all what sucked about Dusty. In fact, it was probably his best quality by FAR.

The sad part is that almost everyone knew that Quade should be canned, but based on how Hendry worked, I think there was still some apprehension that Quade might return.

It is good to have a new front office.

The whole "accountability" thing is much less important than the fact that Dusty liked bad decisions, poor players and overall stupidity. A lack of accountability is not why Dusty's teams failed.

So that makes the Cardinals, Red Sox and Cubs that need a new manager. Going to be an interesting game of managerial musical chairs going on this offseason.

And you're absolutely right. Dusty was a terrible manager in just about every aspect. I'm just saying that you need a guy who can hold people accountable, because if a manager doesn't hold players accountable, eventually the players won't hold themselves accountable and then everyone will cease to give a crap. We saw it under Dusty, we saw it at the end with Lou.

BTW - if the team was going to go into a full-scale rebuild mode, I think they would have kept Quade and hired someone new when they thought the team was ready.

I really doubt they're going to go get the manager of the future and purposefully saddle him with a bucket of crap in year 1.

Very good point. If you hire a new guy with the intention of playing out the string for a year you run the risk of a really bad season and the fans turning on the new guy before he has a chance to manage a real team. Maybe they are smart enough to ignore fan dissent, but coming out of the Boston scene there's no doubt they are aware of the dangers of pissing off the masses.

The Cards can take Sandberg for all I care and most of the rest of you, but imagine the reaction from all the ignorant, homer Cubs fans. Ugh,that's gonna be annoying if it happens.

If there was one thing I liked about Dusty, it's that he never called out his players publicly and always stuck up for them and the players loved playing for him. That's literally the ONE positive thing about him.

The GM holds people accountable by hiring, firing, trading, releasing and replacing. There is very little a manager can do to hold people accountable, and much like many fan complaints I think that is just an empty phrase.

I love it. It's about the biggest FU to the meatballs possible.

I'd feel bad for Sully, though.

I'd actually get a pretty good laugh out of it, moreso if Theo/Hoyer hires Martinez.
