Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein will be headed to the Cubs any day now, but not necessarily as general manager.

Epstein is actively looking to hire a GM, a move that would enable him to serve the Cubs as president of baseball operations, according to major league sources.

Padres general manager Jed Hoyer, who is under contract through 2013 with a club option for ’14, is one of Epstein’s targets, SI.com reported on Tuesday.

It is unclear if Hoyer would want to join Epstein or if the Padres would allow Hoyer to depart. One possible complication: The Padres might want compensation from the Cubs for Hoyer at a time when the Cubs are negotiating compensation with the Red Sox for Epstein.

Go to work, earn money, spend time with family or girlfriend, and stop this insanity.

This is worse than the daily knee-jerk minor league reports and who is and isn't a prospect.

They are all prospects, and Theo Epstein is NO GUARANTEE of the coveted, and meaningless Title!!

But which god should I follow?

I guess after thinking about it, it can only be good for the Cubs that Epstein hires as many great baseball people as possible, and having someone fill the GM role allows them to hire a high profile guy who might already be a GM or a highly regarded assistant GM.

At the same time, its slightly disappointing the Epstein will likely be the behind the scenes guy and the GM will be the one speaking to the media, attending press conferences for signings/trades/hirings, etc.

I honestly don't find that disappointing at all. In fact, I think I find it ideal.

Epstein will be focusing on what I think he does best.

Theo as the president is basically doing the same thing he would be doing as general manager except he'd more than likely have the final say on things which is a good thing. If we can find a way to bring in Jed Hoyer as general manager, we have one of the best front offices in baseball.

Yeah, I have zero problem with this scenario at all.

Yeah its pretty much all for selfish reasons why it disappoints me. God he's just so dreamy...I want him in on those press conferences.

Probably some sort of negotiating tactic IMO. Slap Hoyer or Byrnes with the GM tag instead of assistant GM, and call it a day. Makes it clearer that Theo is getting a clear promotion to president which would generally require less compensation then if they think he's just essentially going to be the GM (same position that he already has). Might end up being something like GarPax on steroids.

Theo's weakness has undoubtedly been FA signings, so it might not be the worst idea in the world to bring in a GM. But I don't know whether that's a particularly strong attribute for Hoyer.

He spent his entire GM career with the Padres, so he hasnt really had the chance to prove what he can do with any kind of payroll flexibility.

Okay, objectively, I want this resolved quickly and easily.

But the stupid, drama-loving part of me wants to see the Cubs get involved in a simultaneous two-front compensation fight on opposite coasts. I want the entire league to be on edge and whining that the Cubs have no respect for contracts and are trying to lift people left and right.

I'm all for the best guy in that position who is ballsy, gutsy, can make those poor contracts disappear and make the best decisions when it comes to signing Free agents and trades, whether it's Theo or one of the guys from SD.

For the record, I'm not criticizing. I'm saying I legitimately don't know. The only FA signings I can think of offhand are O-Dawg and Aaron Harang. I'd have to look closer before coming to any sort of an opinion. And you're right, just by virtue of it being San Diego changes the equation considerably.

Whether it's Theo as GM with Hoyer/Byrnes as assistant GM, or Theo as President of Baseball Ops with Hoyer/Byrnes as GM, it's still going to be a collective decision. And Theo's still going to be ranked higher in the organization and have the final and main say regardless of which way it plays out.

And the only reason people like Trey McNutt is because he has three of them. Seriously now, time for Ricketts to sew this up.

Earlier you were criticizing the Red Sox for dragging this out, and yet you still say the Cubs should give up McNutt

Swirl-stopper statement: wake me when something of consequence happens. Otherwise, this is dead to me.

He's either coming or not. There's no in between. Tell me when it's one or the other. The rest of the riff-raff? Meaningless.

Just tell me when the press conference is going to happen, man.

Or if the whole thing has collapsed.

The *swirl*. It's a waste of time.
