Maybe I'm gun-shy on that whole thing after the Smardz fiasco, but rather than expect him to suddenly become way better at baseball because he can now focus on it, I'll just wait and see.

But Samardzija did become way better at baseball.

I'm starting to become convinced that maybe 5 people noticed this. In the second half of the season he was arguably the team's best reliever.

The Red Sox are believed to be focused on Trey McNutt, a 22-year-old right-hander who is arguably the organization’s best pitching prospect. The 32nd-round pick seemingly came out of nowhere (Haleyville, Ala.) in 2010 and went 10-1 with a 2.48 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 116.1 innings.

McNutt dealt with blister problems in 2011 and didn’t really build off that breakout season, finishing at 5-6 with a 4.55 ERA at Tennessee. But there’s still enough upside where the Cubs could think he’d eventually be part of their 2012 staff – and refuse to give in to Boston’s demands.

Either way, it will likely take two prospects. The Marlins set that baseline when they lured Ozzie Guillen from the South Side to South Beach.

A source familiar with the negotiations said that the Cubs are reluctant to give up anyone who’ll be on their 40-man roster this winter. In that sense, Josh Vitters and Matt Szczur are viewed as unlikely to be included in the deal.

Screw that. If the Marlins are precedent, their prospects combined where nowhere near as good as McNutt.

??

Posting question marks like that is classic muskat too. Muskat.

That was funny. =D> Good stuff.

Starting to roll with the punches. Alright!

You know who's good at rolling with the punches?

Rihanna?

...Wait, no - Muskat!

Maybe. Way too late nevertheless. And not to the extent that was expected.

He'll be 27 the next time he throws a pitch for us and I'm not exactly sure what he did last year is proof that he panned out and is actually going to be a non-bust next year.

Maybe he will. I sure hope so.

I am curious what it's like for the front office people in Boston that Theo wants to bring to Chicago. What if they're not sold on moving to Chicago, but they have to decide so the Cubs/Red Sox can negotiate whether or not they go? They could definitely be in an awkward situation.

You just ask them if they would be open to going, and respect each person's decision, and then bake that into your negotiating position. I don't see what is so odd about it.

Exactly. Ask anyone he wants to come with him if they'd want to come with him, then tell the Red Sox how many. I'm sure at some point names would have to be involved prior to the deal being reached.

I'm talking about those that are on the fence and have to make decisions quickly. That is not an easy thing to do.

What I *do* think is that some of these delays might be due to people checking with families and such, behind the scenes.

Of course we'll never know because that's private, and rightfully so. But the reality is, people need to take stock of where they want to be, where their families want to be, etc.....when something like this is about to happen.

To be uncertain whether or not a prospect has panned out?

Are you trolling?

We paid him what 15 million before he became a good pitcher?

Love that he's seemingly put it together, but its fair to call it a fiasco up to this season.

I didn't watch a full Cubs game after like, halfway through June, so Samardzija's numbers are kind of shocking to me. I guess at this point, he has enough innings to where we can say he can officially strike people out. As I remember, he had two questions in the minors, can he strike people out and can he stop walking them. Does he do that effectively wild thing that Marmol does? I don't even remember what Samardzija's strike out pitch is. I know it's not that straight-ass fastball.

i guess he's got a nasty slider now

and apparently that fb has some sink to it

The fastball actually has pretty good movement when he's on.

His slider has improved significantly and is a genuine out pitch now.

He also has a pretty decent split he can throw to lefties.
