i just did

You went from cautious optimism and being critical of Theo to all out fan boy.

I kinda did the same thing, only I did it a while ago when I stopped caring that he signed Carl Crawford to that awful deal. Maybe it's denial, but I'll just go ahead and pretend that was someone else's doing.

I'm on the Red Sox email list and - I KID YOU NOT - I just got an email from them with this subject line: "Break into the BIZ with the Red Sox!"

Looks like they are taking a decidely open approach to finding their next GM . . . ! :-)) :-)) :-))

Agreed. It's going to take a day or two to pan out, but basically this is what is happening.

Red Sox: "We want something awesome and Theo has to agree to have his mind wiped on the way out.

Cubs: "You get nothing."

Red Sox: "Fine, how about something insignificant and Theo can't bring anyone with him without our approval."

Cubs: "Done."

Theo was near the bottom of the "awesome" options imo. I'm focusing on the fact that we are choosing from the awesome pile at all rather than nitpicking that I would have rather had Friedman or that Atlanta guy.

I have to say, this is as excited I've been about the Cubs in over a year. Please let this be true.

This...except "two years".

I haven't been this excited since the beginning of 09... so probably 3 years.

Even in August when we were in first place, I was less excited than I am about this.

Wasn't that for like a day and then the Cards ran off?

Almost a two week stretch, bouncing a half game in and out of first.

Cashner and/or Jackson for Epstein???? #-o And some of you guys make fun of my trade proposals. :-k

I wouldn't trade either but either of those for Epstein is far less absurd than that Upton/Davis package of yours.

It's a tossup, IMO.

We aren't trying to get Epstein out of some 15 year contract to come to the Cubs. The only reason he's interested is because he's at least a little disgruntled in Boston, and he's only under contract for another 12 months. For the Red Sox to demand any player of value(aka anyone who would play in MLB or find themselves on a Top 15-20 prospect list), is a desperate attempt that someone like Ricketts should see right through. He can respond "you can take whatever trinket I'm offering(cash, minor league filler, Bryan LaHair) and get something for Theo, or you can trap him in Boston for 12 months and piss him off, assuring he's gone after 2012 for nothing". The Red Sox have no leverage to demand value.

based on this logic, no team would ever get anything of value for a player, manager or general manager who requests a trade, yet it happens all the time.

they could easily keep him around, win 100 games and the world series next year, and he decides to stay in what's kind of his home town with his wife and young family. it's not like he hasn't changed his mind before. or he still wants to leave, but there are other good organizations in the market for a GM. and what do the cubs do, have randy bush make all the decisions for the next calendar year? there is still some leverage on the red sox' side.

Looks like Boston's ownership has gone a little batty. They would seem to be hoping for a massive shake up, so Ricketts better not give them anything of value.

Olney and Simmons referred to similar goings on in the Red Sox clubhouse. "Last days of Rome" stuff.

I guess it's one of the benefits of having a farm system with no super blue chip prospects ... they couldn't give up anything overly substantial even if they wanted to.

If you only look at what they'd do in terms of moves as a GM, yes, he's probably at the bottom...but there's a certain panache that the move carries with it that gives him some extra points and PR-wise it could do a lot for the team at a time when interest/popularity was waning (by Cubs standards). Plus it's damn fun for us, too.

My honest guess is Buster Olney hasn't heard of a single Cubs prospect other than Brett Jackson, hence why he was mentioned. I'll be very surprised if the final deal includes anyone better than Chris Carpenter, with some cash thrown in as well.

Truffle's worried something good is about to happen to the Cubs, so he's creating fantasy scenarios where we lose one of our best young players

no, i'm trying to be realistic about it. who do you think they'll be giving up?

Nobody who's ever appeared on a top 100 prospect list. Lottery ticket(s) for the most part. And I'm not even convinced we'll be giving up anything in terms of players.

It seems to me that if Theo stays in Boston, he's getting extended before the saga comes to an end. From what I heard on M&H this morning, the Cubs offer is 5 years at over 15 mil. No way he turns it down unless the Red Sox offer him an extension before he officially informs Ricketts that he's declining his offer to stay.

This being the case, I agree, we should't owe them too much of a compensation because if they let him go, it means they probably didn't plan to extend him. If he stays, he likely forces their hand to give him an extension similar to what we offered, maybe with some kind of hometown discount.

Even if he does pass on our offer, and Boston still hesitates to extend him, there are still the Angels and Orioles with jon openings who could contact him, and as bad as the Orioles are, it would probably look worse for the Red Sox if he left for a team in their division.

I've said from the beginning that it's only going to be monetary compensation. I'm sticking with that.

This is also my thought. It'll be a Crawford/Lackey tax.

Yup, Soriano hit a 12th inning grand slam to beat the Astros at Wrigley on, I think, August 1st as the Cubs peaked for that season. They soon ran into a couple of series with the phillies and other tough teams and quickly lost hope of the playoffs.

Personally, I'm more excited about what Jackson can do than Castro.

Seriously... if Starlin Castro had the line in MLB that Jackson put up in AAA last season, we'd nut ourselves. If Castro at his peak = Jackon's AAA numbers we'd be thrilled... and Jackson (nor Castro) are even fully developed.

Castro put up a .376/.421/.569 line at AA while 2 years younger than Jackson was last year. I'm relatively sure if we let Castro amass half a season at AAA next year he'd outperform Jackson by quite a bit.

If most hitters could put up the numbers in MLB that they do in the PCL, their respective teams would nut themselves.

Mike & Mike are announcing that Theo has agreed to terms with the Cubs, but they're still ironing out his official title and compensation. Not sure this is anything new, outside of the "agreed" part

I prefer to call them spazzes. More mean-spirited that way.

Just think about it logically, this will go far enough that Epstein has agreed to terms, the Red Sox are letting him walk, and the Boston's gonna say NO DEAL after all that and force Theo to come back to work for them. Compensation is a non-factor.
