Bruce continues to educate the masses

http://dailyherald.com/article/20111011/sports/710119650/

But Epstein also has embraced modern-day baseball thinking that includes advanced statistical analysis, something the Cubs have been slow to do and something Ricketts has said he wants. Noted stats guru Bill James has been part of the front office in Boston.

EDIT -

Bruce also appears to be in line with what Bernstein has been saying re: public funding

With the Cubs wanting public funding for major renovations to Wrigley Field, the hiring of Epstein, if it happens, would give the Cubs an instant shot of prestige.

Rahm has apparently indicated a willingness to deal with the Cubs but they needed a shot in the arm PR-wise like this.

Cashner and/or Jackson for Epstein???? #-o And some of you guys make fun of my trade proposals. :-k

I wouldn't trade either but either of those for Epstein is far less absurd than that Upton/Davis package of yours.

It's a tossup, IMO.

We aren't trying to get Epstein out of some 15 year contract to come to the Cubs. The only reason he's interested is because he's at least a little disgruntled in Boston, and he's only under contract for another 12 months. For the Red Sox to demand any player of value(aka anyone who would play in MLB or find themselves on a Top 15-20 prospect list), is a desperate attempt that someone like Ricketts should see right through. He can respond "you can take whatever trinket I'm offering(cash, minor league filler, Bryan LaHair) and get something for Theo, or you can trap him in Boston for 12 months and piss him off, assuring he's gone after 2012 for nothing". The Red Sox have no leverage to demand value.

Buster Olney just said that a prospect could be involved, "someone like a Brett Jackson".

Go [expletive] yourself, Buster, and quit talking out of your ass.

Giving up Jackson would be a mistake.

If you are hiring a guy with a promotion involved who the team has been completely noncommital about keeping longterm, it's stupid to even suggest that a #1 prospect needs to be returned.

Cubs would be nuts to give up Brett Jackson for a disgruntled GM. The bottom line is Henry came out and told everyone Esptein has a short-term shelf life. Give them one mid level prospect and call it a day. If the Red Sox refuse let the Theo situation be their problem to handle.

Highlights of what I just listened to on the radio..WEEI just reported deals is basically done only compensation left. Permission to talk was apparently giving last Friday. Talks progressed Quickly

5 years 15 million. Will be done by weekend but probably sooner. That's what WEEI is saying this morning.

Looks like Boston's ownership has gone a little batty. They would seem to be hoping for a massive shake up, so Ricketts better not give them anything of value.

Or they realized they'd have to do some serious spin when they gave Theo permission last Friday, so they leaked as many damaging details as possible so as to provide cover. I'm sure the meatheads in NE are going to talk even more fervently about "clearing out the entire organization," (even those who weren't on board with the Theo move).

Given the way that ownership gets off fairly scott-free in that article (the worst accusation basically says they didn't know it was going on), it seems to me that this was an ownership-level leak.

670 Keeps playing a snippet of that Boston radio station (the one Henry and Lucchino were on) saying that it's "essentially" done and they give contract terms of 5 years, $15M.

dan_bernstein Dan Bernstein

Per WEEI: #Cubs and Theo agree on 5yr/$15MM deal. No job title yet. Compensation to Red Sox undecided.

Yea, it's Bernstein, but he's just reporting on a report. And I heard that report. So it's a real report.

i keep thinking billy beane to boston back in 2002, and the 180 he pulled after accepting the job. cautious optimism.

I don't think Theo will back out if he's already agreed to terms. My concern is that the Red Sox will demand too much in compensation and we'll either pay it or the Sox will back out of negotiations.

Tweet from Heyman this morning says compensation may only be cash. Still may be another hurdle but deal still has a decent shot.

Please be true. I know it's probably the right move to give up a player like Jackson for Theo, but it just doesn't seem right to me to trade a player for a front office guy.

No, but Brett Jackson's value at this point is not even in the same realm as Castro's, so that's irrelevent.

I can't believe we're talking about Brett Jackson and Andrew Cashner over Theo Epstein. I know our system generally sucks and guys like Brett Jackson seem like Bryce Harper to us sometimes, but we're talking about a guy who would completely change the ideology and thought process of this organization.

Honestly, Brett Jackson won't mean [expletive] if we end up hiring a GM who ends up being not-so-good. This organization has needed a mentality overhaul for years, or decades. Theo Epstein offers that immediately, and no other candidate is even close to that safe of a bet.

Seriously, if we had a deeper farm system, maybe we could get away with that, but as of now, it would be seeting the organization back too far no matter who The GM. They already have a guy posed to be one of the best CFs in baseball. They shouldn't be trying to pillage us. If they want some lower level guys or other prospects like Flaherty or Carpenter, that's OK.

As is, the only guys in the big leagues and upper levels we have of real value are Garza, Castro, Cashner, and Jackson. Maybe Soto. We have some intriguing guys in the lower levels, but you never know how they could turn out. We simply can't afford to give up Jackson or Cashner. I'd prefer take Lackey and his entire contract of their hands, and kick them some fringe prospects, maybe even someone like Marlon Byrd if they want a corner OF.

I don't think trading one of our best prospects to release Theo from one year of his contract is necessarily the right move. I wouldn't mind trading them a B-level prospect or two, but if they want Cashner or Castro or Jackson they can forget it and we'll sign Theo next year.

I have to say, this is as excited I've been about the Cubs in over a year. Please let this be true.

This...except "two years".

I haven't been this excited since the beginning of 09... so probably 3 years.

Even in August when we were in first place, I was less excited than I am about this.

We're not going to trade anything of substantial value. Stop worrying about it, worriers.

Wasn't that for like a day and then the Cards ran off?
