Is Purple Shirt Guy the go-to for Theo news because he may or may not have seen Theo outside of Starbucks?

I am thrilled that Epstein is coming. Compensation won't be that much. He has a HUGE job ahead of him, this team is a mess.

No it isn't.

It sorta is. It's just not as bad as people think. We have been under awful ass-backwards ownership after all and professed an ass-backward philosophy of swing-at-everything as our minor league instruction over the past few years. We have a couple of awful contracts and are dead set on trading a decent starter and paying him to play for another team. We paid a closer decent money and now he might not be all that great anymore.

There are a lot of problems but that doesn't mean this can't be made a competitive team next year. I feel like the organizational problems will take more/longer to fix than the major league product itself.

If you bitched about the safari, you should have been ashamed of yourself the moment that bitching left your mind and hit the keyboard. If you bitched about the 2010 draft, there's really not much to be ashamed of. If you had doubts about Ricketts prior to the day the Hendry firing was announced (that's me) there's really nothing to be ashamed of.

Yep. I was lukewarm on the Ricketts from the moment they didn't fire Hendry and shifted to completely happy with ownership when he did. Prior to that, they were saying the right things, and I liked the money being put in to Wrigley and the other facilities, but I couldn't get past the Hendry thing to all out happiness.

yup. i've begun to believe that perhaps Ricketts had a plan along these lines the whole time, but, as an astute businessman (which he is, afterall), upon entering a business field he knew little more than outsider fodder about, allowed himself the time to learn the mechanics of the inside world of baseball team ownership, while being ok with taking the heat for the time being, knowing that eventually he would come out victorious (i use that term relatively, understand), also that, truly being an astute businessman one absolutely can not crumble to the constant outside pleas for change, but, on the other hand, can not ignore them altogether either, as that too is folly. the line of progression Ricketts has made/continues to make, if it is kept up, perhaps leads me to think he was a better option than the Mavericks owner whose name is honestly escaping me right now.

Sure but with (hopefully) Pujols and Fielder gone next year our chances go up quite a bit.

not sure what this means, but gammons just tweeted it

Beane compensation is not precedent. Ozzie Guillen is

It means the Red Sox won't be getting any good players.

Oh wait, it's Gammons, the last coherent thought he had was about 6 years ago.

Guess they want to give him his moment of "redemption" after they gave him crap on the air a couple days ago, since it turns out that Theo WAS in town this weekend and then Sherman tweeted that Theo's friends said the report was probably true.

what awful contracts do they have besides soriano?

OK, awful is exaggerating it, but we have substantial money tied up in mediocre to OK players and have a good amount of guys who are overpaid and don't have bright prospects of getting better.

Does anyone remember that crap pile our 2002 team was? The 2003 Cubs were picked to finish 3rd or 4th that year. Is our team a mess? In spots, sure. Can one good off season make us contenders?

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

We had Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Matt Clement, Carlos Zambrano, and Juan Cruz

(I don't care that Dusty was stupid enough to trot out Estes... we still had Cruz, damnit)

Isn't Soriano the only guy signed past this coming season?

The Cubs aren't going to set the world on fire next season, but given how bad the division will be it won't take much to actually be competitive, and there's a banner FA class out there that can fill gaping holes that the Cubs have. An actual "good" team is likely still at least a season away, but 2012, can easily be a huge step in the right direction. 2003 and 2007 both showed that rebounds can be pretty sudden in the craptacular NL Central.

look i think everyone had some doubts, just because nobody knows the future, but ricketts said a lot of good things about a more statistical approach and investing more in amateur talent. then they didn't invest in amateur talent in 2010 and some people are already declaring him a disaster. i'd much prefer an owner who knows he's not a baseball guy and takes some time to evaluate the people he inherited rather than just immediately throwing everyone out on their ass and starting completely over.

i really liked the part in the article by jim bowden which compared Theo Epstein to Andy MacPhail. (insert Mike Murphy sound effects)

If you want a more recent example look at 2007 after a horrendous 2006.

I thought we were talking about how much better we could make this roster in one offseason.

But Estes did have that one gem in September. Who was that against again?

The level of denial regarding the Cubs' current major league roster is really quite amazing to me.

They are above average at maybe 2 or 3 spots. The mediocrity runs deep. The upside potential is modest, at best.

Theo or whomever has his work cut out for him, and those expecting a contender next year are going to be disappointed IMO.

The Marmol contract isn't looking great

Mike Quade said a lot of good things last fall too. Saying good things is all well and good, but largely meaningless until you do good things.

Marmol is also signed through 2013 but that's it.
