Wells doesn't have to return to being a 3 win pitcher to be useful.

Agreed, but doesn't his overall usefullness as 1-1.5 WAR player depend on who else is around him in the rotation? I don't see how he does much for this Cubs team as it is currently put together.

He's a cheap arm who'll eat innings assuming he's healthy. That has value on any team. If we're punting 2012, this is the perfect opportunity to see if he can get back to at least league average.

I don't have a problem with him being in the picture for 2012 or anything, I just have very little faith. Also, is he arb eligible now? Are we looking at $2-3m?

Hard to track down comparables, but I see Gorzelanny at 800K and Marshall at 950K. Wells picked a very bad time(for him) to have a bad season. I'd say maybe 1.2M?

I'd have no problem paying him that (and more, even). I just, firmly, believe the Cubs should proceed like he's not all that reliable.

It's not like it was a frayed labrum, it was a forearm injury.

And forearm injuries aren't just a sore throat either.

Forearm injuries very often presage TJS.

Depends. Sometimes 2 weeks, sometimes 7-8 years (a la Wainwright).

Is that sarcasm? You're tracing a forearm injury from 7 years prior to Wainwright getting TJS?

No. He had some forearm problems and they found a slight UCL tear that held up for a long time before he actually had to get it fixed. Granted, that's probably an extreme outlier, but obviously not impossible.

It seems so weird to me that Zambrano is 6 months younger than CJ Wilson.

I don't believe his birthdate any more than I believe Aramis Ramirez'.

Why on earth wouldn't you believe Aramis's?

Mexicans be lyin

Dominicans be tryin'.

and now this

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Rangers and Yu Darvish have agreed to a contract.

Heyman adds that the two sides are "just wrapping it up." No word yet on the terms, but the deal is expected to cover five years with an option for a sixth and carry a total value north of $50 million. Darvish, 25, posted a 1.44 ERA and 276/36 K/BB ratio across 232 innings last year in Japan. He carries ace upside here in the states

RT @MLBInsideNews Source : Rangers unlikely to sign Darvish

Strange. This just popped up on MLB Trade Rumors:

The Rangers have agreed to sign Yu Darvish, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The sides are wrapping what's expected to be a five or six-year deal with 25 minutes remaining before today's 4pm CDT deadline. Darvish is being briefed on the details of the deal, Yahoo's Tim Brown tweets. Agents Don Nomura and Arn Tellem represent the 6'5" 25-year-old.

I'm beginning to think that an email to this guy could get him to tweet just about anything, not unlike the guy who tweeted about an NFL draft prospect that didn't exist just because someone sent him a 1 line email.

He's just throwing stuff against the wall, so that on the rare occasions he is coincidentally right, he can fool people into thinking he has inside sources.

4:00pm: The sides agreed to a six-year deal worth $60MM, tweets Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The agreement includes bonuses that could be worth another $10MM, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports tweets. The Rangers have confirmed the move.

Good move for Rangers, I think. If you take the entirety of the contract and posting fee, you get 6/111 - which is $18.5 mil per year. Darvish could definitely bomb, but if he doesn't the Rangers are getting a good bargain.

Seems like it. I miss the good ol days when MLBTR was the same way.

I, for one, don't miss the overuse of these, though:

there's a large gulf between "rangers getting a bargain" and "darvish could definitely bomb." as it is, $18.5m/year is just less than the going rate for elite SP (which seems to be in the $20-25m range, given the AAV of contracts given to sabathia, cliff lee, santana and halladay). to be a good bargain he'll have to be an ace; to even be worth his contract he'll have to produce at something like greinke/cj wilson/hamels/matt cain levels.

For the money outlay, Darvish needs to be a top 10 to 15 pitcher in baseball over the next 6 seasons for the contract to be worth it. I would've been fine with us taking this kind of chance too, but it's certainly risky as hell. Given the option of Cespedes and Soler combined, for less total money, versus Darvish, it's a no brainer for me, in taking the Cubans.

assuming that baseball america hasn't changed its policy of considering every rookie-eligible player to be a prospect, where do you think they'd rank darvish? one would assume that these names will be among their top 10:

bryce harper

mike trout

matt moore

jurickson profar

julio teheran

then some other highly-rated guys: shelby miller, jesus montero, jameson taillon, manny machado, some of the guys drafted early in 2011 (bauer, bundy, cole, rendon)
