That sentence was immediately preceeded by them saying he was still the man or something like that. It was a two-faced answer. "He's going to be our GM, unless he decides he's not."

Dodged.

Is that what they really said? I thought it was "He's our GM, and until we receive a request from someone to interview him for a higher position, he will remain at that position." That doesnt feel the same to me.

They certainly could've dodged the Epstein topic far harder than saying, "Welp, he's not gonna be the GM forever and this job sucks after a while."

A simple, "We're not going to comment on the speculation regarding Theo," would've been a much better way of dodging it.

But nobody heard that. Because they said so much other quote worthy stuff.

Nobody heard that because they wanted to hear other stuff. Because it leads to the answer they want and because it's more exciting that way.

If we were Boston fans hoping for him to stay, we wouldn't be focusing on the second part of the quote. There'd be lots of talk about how they were asked directly if Epstein was still the man and ownership saying "He is."

Just like when they were asked about non-lateral moves. They said their policy was to allow such contact requests, but there have been times where they haven't, and declined to elaborate on specifics. But I've seen it said a few times now that they said they would grant an interview if it was for a non-lateral move.

Nah...Boston fans on SoSH were focused on the same "quote worthy" stuff we were. Many believed that Theo was on his way out after that interview.

I don't understand how "Theo is our GM until he decides he's not" means that he's staying.

Also, of course they are going to say things like "Theo is our guy". If the Cubs can't come to an agreement with Theo or Theo decides to stay in Boston, its not going to be pretty if they don't express confidence in their current GM.

It's pretty safe to say that if we don't hear something by sundown today, this is going to drag into Sunday at the very least, correct?

I was reading SoSH at the time, and I just went back to check the thread. In a four-page thread about the subject, I saw one poster, *maybe* two, who you could describe as talking about the interview as being a sign that Epstein may be out and/or allowed to leave. The Boston fans on SoSH barely commented on that stuff and seemed much more interested in the Crawford/managers/fitness stuff.

do you mean to suggest that the Boston fans are not as excited/engulfed/interested in who we sign for a GM as we are?

NO WAY

Why do I feel he is coming here? Interestingly enough, the one guy who can end all speculation if he is staying in Boston is Theo Epstein. And interstingly enough, he has not been seen or heard from in a week.

It doesn't. He might be staying, he might be going, but nothing in that interview gave the slightest hint either way, by design.

Seeing as how it's their GM, they would have at least a little reason to be interested.

It seems like every time I check this thread it's three or four pages longer and I get all excited thinking there must be some "real" news.

judging from what you wrote, it sounds like they had some interest in it.

the cubs getting theo epstein would probably be the most significant cubs transaction (at the time) in our lifetimes, right?

I suppose if you go by significance of the person at the time, yea, although Nomar and Aramis are pretty close. Otherwise I imagine that'd be getting Sammy from the Sox.

I'd say that Ryne Sandberg trade turned out okay for the Cubs.

It's true. And it's funny to say that, considering he's a gm and we've had 100-page threads about people like brian roberts and jake peavy. Putting it all in context, it's almost scary to think about what would happen if someone ever gave us a consistently excellent team.

One thing I can think of that would happen is I'd be willing to load up 100 ticketmaster pages to try to score seats again.

Haven't cared to go through that for a couple years now. And haven't missed it.

Yes, I think acquiring Epstein would be hugely significant, and very exciting. I hope it happens.

not even close. no player would be as big as getting a massive culture change in your organization (after needing it for sooo long)

Sosh poster breaking down what has caused us much grief the last 2 years. He is making his case for Theo not wanting to come here based on the horrendous team and contracts Hendry left behind.

Yeah, the opportunity to look like a hero is there, but like you said it's not going to be with a few minor changes. Whoever takes over in Chicago will have a HUGE task ahead.

It's amazing how badly mismanaged the Cubs have been and how Jim Hendry was allowed to keep his job so long. Check this out:

LF Alfonso Soriano, 35yo, 3 years $54 million remaining, 1.3 WAR in 2011

SP Carlos Zambrano, 30 yo, 2 years $35.875 million remaining, stormed off and left team in a huff in 2011

SP Ryan Dempster, 36 yo, 2 years $27.5 million remaining, 0.8 WAR in 2011

CF Marlon Byrd, 33 yo, 1 year $6.5 million remaining, 1.7 WAR in 2011

Not ONLY do they have so much tied into bad contracts (the first three could easily cripple a poor team) but there is a death of ML talent like you mentioned. Geovany Soto had a bad year, but he's a decent player, Starlin Castro looks like a star in the making, Matt Garza is decent, the bullpen is pretty good... but other than those few positions, the team is a dumpster fire. A dumpster fire with very little help on the horizon.

Maybe Theo wants that challenge. The Cubs would be a cherry job, but it's not like he's going to waltz in and be the hero. It's going to be a few years before they even start to resemble a ML quality team again.

The Dempster and Byrd contracts aren't bad at all.

And, yet again, analysis that inexplicably has the Cubs "years" away from contending based on two contracts (one of which is gone after next season).
