that OR Ricketts only offered a GM role, which the Red Sox arent going to allow (and theo probably doenst want). so now Ricketts has to evaluate whether or not he's ok with Theo as Pres.

this is my worry, and why there is no news.

From all indications, Ricketts is prepared to offer Theo the moon to come here. Not only that, Henry said he would not grant permission to the Cubs if it were a lateral move.

right, but I guess I missed the part where Boston actually gave Ricketts permission to talk to him.

If they were told no, we would have found out by now.

I don't know if that's quite true, but I think that there could be a lot more going on. They could be discussing both Epstein and Cherington. Like I said, unless they move Epstein to a higher ofice and give Cherington their GM job, there's no reason that they would extend Theo as GM and not let Cherington pursue the GM job with us.

This is a huge opportunity, esepcially for a first time GM, and if Epstein doesn't get it and keeps the GM job, Cherington must have some interest.

But, but, people around the game say he will stay in Boston unless something changes. Did you know it will be 80 in Chicago tomorrow unles it turns cold?

No doubt he is just tweeting just to tweet.

HA! Vinestal got a reply out of Heyman.

Yeah lol I thought that was funny to, apparently he doesnt think he is ever wrong. I just find him extremely annoying, I certainly didn't expect a response of any kind.

Actually, you make me rethink that quote Henry how they grant interviews for non-lateral positions....is it possible he could be referring to Cherington and not Theo?

Maybe Ricketts requested permission to speak with both.

It's possible they were speaking in the most generic way possible and there's nothing to be gained from parsing it.

Of course, you realize, that will not stop us from doing so.

That could be the big holdup. Either:

A. Epstein comes to the Cubs, Cherington Boston GM

B. Epstein extended as GM, Cherington to Cubs

C. Epstein promoted to higher poition with Boston, Cherington Bostons GM, Ricketts to plan C

Largely because most of us have nothing better to do.

I imagine baseball is just like any other industry: Lots of rumors and speculation, most of it baseless.

Some executive in the Yankees or Dodgers or Rockies organization is going to have some random opinion on whether Epstein is going to leave Boston or not, and it's based on nothing more than you or I's speculation.

These national reporters are reporting the truth when they say "around the game, people are saying..." but it's still meaningless.

And I find it entertaining as heck. Please, continue.

Option C seems unlikely, imo. What would happen with Lucchino?

I'm guessing there is a guy named Carl who lives in Missouri who is actually a Cardinal fan who comes here to promote train usage by using the reverse psychology method and posting under the avatar of "KyleJRM".

This is because it is the opinion of people around the game, likely other teams execs and such. I highly doubt that any of them are in contact with Henry or Ricketts at this time. It's all opinions.

Hopefully you're right. What it comes down to is that if the do extend Epstein as GM, theres little incentive for Cherington not to accept an offer from Ricketts. Similarly, if they want Ricketts to stay on the last year of his existing contract without an extension, he'd likely prefer go with Ricketts if he's willing to offer him a long term deal.

Nah I don't think so. There was obviously a reason why they came on the radio. I think they had an agenda behind a lot of what they were saying.

The Epstein stuff was only a small part of a larger interview. They dodged the question as hard as they possibly could, and moved on to talking about Carl Crawford and nutrition and stuff.

They certainly could've dodged the Epstein topic far harder than saying, "Welp, he's not gonna be the GM forever and this job sucks after a while."

Yep. Not that hard to say "We're going to work as hard as we can to keep Theo with the Red Sox for a long time."

That sentence was immediately preceeded by them saying he was still the man or something like that. It was a two-faced answer. "He's going to be our GM, unless he decides he's not."

Dodged.

But nobody heard that. Because they said so much other quote worthy stuff.

Nobody heard that because they wanted to hear other stuff. Because it leads to the answer they want and because it's more exciting that way.

If we were Boston fans hoping for him to stay, we wouldn't be focusing on the second part of the quote. There'd be lots of talk about how they were asked directly if Epstein was still the man and ownership saying "He is."

Just like when they were asked about non-lateral moves. They said their policy was to allow such contact requests, but there have been times where they haven't, and declined to elaborate on specifics. But I've seen it said a few times now that they said they would grant an interview if it was for a non-lateral move.
