Olney just keeps throwing out crazy, highly respected names and I don't know how much to trust him. He just threw Pat Gillick out there. Alongside the other names we know, Gillick almost goes into the retread pile.

gillick was an outstanding GM and should not be considered a retread. look at the performances of the organizations he joined. the blue jays won two world series. he went to baltimore and they made the playoffs twice in his three years. then he went to seattle, they made the playoffs twice and tied the record for most wins in a season. then he went to the phillies and made the playoffs twice and won a world series. good luck finding a well-traveled gm with a better track record than that.

I'd love to have Gillick. The thing us, considering his age and where he is in his career, he'd most certainly want to put together a win now team to do it in the next few years before returning to the golf course once and for all. That's all fine and dandy by me, I just hope he wouldn't sacrifice too much of the farm to do so. I know how important the farm is to Ricketts, but if Gillick were the guy, and I doubt he would be, I'd have to assume that it would be under the condition that he has free reign of the organization.

If they brought Gillick in, it possibly would be to groom the path for Wilken to eventually become GM.

I would be disappointed with that series of events.

Terribly, but I think it would be unlikely as Ricketts has already said they are not looking in house for the GM position.

FWIW, Andy MacPhailure is reportedly stepping down as Orioles' President / VP after the season, however neither he nor the Orioles have yet confirmed this.

If true, this would add another franchise in search of a new GM whom the Cubs would be "competing with" in vetting GM candidates.

Baltimore? They're more likely to get a big name than Tampa Bay, but right now they're a far 5th in that division. I doubt anyone the Cubs will lose sleep over is a serious candidate for that job. Sure if every big name turns the job down it might get a little screwed, but overall I think they'll end up hiring a touted first timer in the lines of Oppenheimer, Levine, Cherington, Ng, and so on.

Three things that are against Baltimore:

1: They're Baltimore.

2: They are owned by Peter Angelos.

3: They're in the AL East.

No worries about the Orioles.

That should be reason #1. It wasn't always so bad to be Baltimore. They were very good from '66-'83, and the 90's had a couple of teams that tried and then lost their pitching to the Yankees (Wells and Mussina).

Had a brain fart. Found a better word to use.

Hearing Epstein for Brian Roberts deal is imminent.

That's good, considering runned isn't a real word. :-)

Thank you.

Clearly the Cubs would get first pick of the field over Baltimore.

Unless Ricketts is going to offer Epstein the same spending as he has in Boston, he might as well forget it. Why would Epstein want to leave a perennial winner with a large payroll and good farm system for the a team that under spends and is tight with spending?

If the cubs are "tight with spending" then like 25 other MLB teams are too.

It is all relative. He is with the Red Sox now.

Wait where is Epstein being considered besides the Cubs?

No its not relative. You said the Cubs are tight with spending and they have the 6th biggest payroll in baseball, 3rd last year. Sorry if the Cubs didn't shell out an extra 20 mil during a period where ownership changed and inherited an extremely flawed and overpaid team. 20 mil probably wouldn't have made this team a playoff team so theres no point in adding more high priced and potentially disasterous contracts. Rickets did the right thing and invested the money in scouting and the draft. Epstein would love smart ownership like that, possibly because it reminds him of the team he's currently with and not the bumbling band of morons that have symbolized the cubs front office for several decades.

His wording was flawed, but his point stands. Epstein has no motivation to jump ship. He has a situation that is already good. Everyone credits him with making it good, and while the Cubs' payroll is high the one he has now is higher than high.

why leave?

Exactly why Bill Beane will be the next GM of Los Cachorros.

New challenge, the idea of being the guy running the ship when both the Red Sox and Cubs broke their WS droughts.

His wording wasn't really flawed at all. The point is, Epstein is going to be taking a downgrade if he leaves Boston, period.

Now he may wish to leave to pursue another challenge (heck he did that already once), but his next gig isn't going to have all of the advantages he enjoys in Boston.
