I've said these two names before, but I haven't seen them brought up in this thread yet so I'd like to mention Logan White and AJ Preller as possible candidates for GM.

David Kaplan

Current baseball exec upon hearing news "There will be a ton of interest in Cubs job. You'll be shocked by the level of interest."

Running a top 3 baseball market team with a top 5 payroll in a division full of small market teams? I can't imagine how there'd be interest in a position like that.

Particularly after a press conference where the owner states flat-out that it's the GM's job to sign players and make baseball decisions and that the new GM will have carte blanche to hire whomever he wants.

Did Ricketts really say that in regards to players or just personel, because if that extends to players, it makes me very happy, and if neither Prince Fielder nor Albert Pujols are in a Cubs uniform come next spring, our future GM will waste no time finding his way onto the [expletive] list.

Yes, but a good GM can get creative with the contracts, as the Soriano, Zambrano, and Dempster money will be coming off the books between '13-'14, so there can be a bit of backloading.

It sounds like Ricketts said all the right things.

Is the press conference posted anywhere? I would like to watch it.

I'll throw my hat into the ring for Andrew Friedman. Would love to see what he and Wilken could do with the extra resources.

I don't want to be too declarative, but if we get Andrew Friedman we might win the division every year for the next 15 years.

:hello:

I can't imagine he wouldn't at least strongly consider it.

Or "The guy who turned a terrible team into a perennial contender in the toughest division in baseball without a huge budget because he's good at his job" of the Rays

That works too.

How much will they be paying combined for Castro, Barney, Soto, Garza and Brett Jackson?

That'd be him. Him or bust. Make it happen Tom.

$6-8 mil? I can't remember how much Garza is due next season.

True, but I suspect that Byrd and Marmol could be moved relatively easily if the new GM felt the need. To me this offseason comes down in large part to whoever we sign and whether we are able to offload Z and Soriano...not that this is news to anyone.

Dunno about marmol. Declining velocity + backloaded contract is not the ideal assett. No doubt someone would bite tho.

I am starting to think that Ricketts is going to be a very, very good owner.

He seems to be a deliberate, thoughtful guy who makes good decisions based on careful analysis and without a great deal of fanfare. Its nothing short of amazing that he was able to inform Hendry of his fate nearly month ago and it never leaked. I give him a ton of credit for that alone, but I also have been genuinely happy with his commitment and attention to putting resources into player development, foreign scouting and draft picks. Next we will see how he conducts his first real executive search (the next "GM" could very well come in as a VP of Basebell Ops, which I think is appropriate in this market).

Ricketts is the anti-Mark Cuban inasmuch as he doesn't make decisions very quickly / dramatically. Perhaps while the styles are different, the results will be just as good.
