Bruce appears to not be a fan of Kenney either.

Kenney should not get off scot-free. He was there to take credit when the Cubs were doing well. When they went south, Kenney had nothing to do with it? Come on. Ricketts was doing some major spin with that one.

I went on Murph and Fred's show today on ESPN 1000 in Chicago and said the same thing.

Also, Ricketts should not just talk to "industry veterans." He should hire one to audit the place from top to bottom, help with the GM hiring and stick around to advise, a la Scotty Bowman with the Blackhawks.

On whether Hendry reported to Kenney or Ricketts:

...Like Tom was doing a little revisionist history. As far as we knew, Hendry reported to Kenney. That may have changed, without anybody knowing, after Ricketts got his feet on the ground with the Cubs. As you suggest, there may have been a dotted-line relationship after Ricketts established himself.

Kenney brought the priest in, a move he regrets. He put up the Toyota sign, a move I regret.

I have read that he favors PSLs, and hates kittens.

So - what else is there?

Okay, so we're up to maybe one thing that Kenney has actually done that would deserve disdain, and it's clearly spelled out that it was (allegedly) him acting on behalf of the ownership that is no longer in charge.

Here's a thought. Who is a better judge of whether or not Crane Kenney is interfering or overstepping his bounds?

Phil Rogers, Joe Cowley, and the like(notice we never see Miles on this list), sportswriters who on other topics we find to be such complete buffoons that it's astonishing they're able to put on matching socks?

Or Tom Ricketts, the very successful businessman whose processes and decisions thus far have deserved almost universal praise, and who chose to keep Kenney on to run the business side when he had an easy excuse to do so(change in ownership) and has shown he's willing to fire top front office people?

So, do you consider Paul Sullivan a complete buffoon as well? He also had some negative comments on Kenney.

Is that a serious question?

I mean, if Kenney does meddle with baseball operations, I don't think that he should have that responsibility or that job. However, if he just handles the business side of the Cubs then I don't get the anger directed towards him. It does seem like he meddles with the baseball side, though.

Didn't Ricketts say as much that maybe things were different in the past but under him the GM reports to him. Under Zell ownership I imagine Zell didn't give a [expletive] about anything on the field so Kenney acted as the bag man.

That seems to be what Bruce was getting at in the second comment. It would make sense, as well, given the differing interest levels of Zell and Ricketts.

Oh, and...Crane Kenney...non-story. Why is it that this organization always has to have these [expletive] boogymen lurking in the shadows holding them back all the [expletive] time??? Drop this horseshit and lets get back to celebrating! Ricketts has done nothing but rock da house, and I can't see him playing Captain Clunker at the moment. Bitch when it is warranted, but don't bitch at shadows.

Really? You regret a sign that brings in additional revene for the team?

Based on the poster my guess is that he more regrets the make of car on the sign than the sign itself.

Well, if Freidman gets hired, then Ill be the first to eat crow.

I'm completely mystified by this.

How will the GM hire prove anything one way or another about what Kenney does and doesn't do, or who he does and doesn't influence?

You make it sound like we'll know once and for all about Kenney as soon as the next GM is named. WTF is that all about?

Bruce Miles has always been kind of a Hendry apologist.

Are you for serious?

I hope he mixed up Bruce Miles and Bruce Levine. Bruce has been one of the only people in the media to question Hendry's ability to do that job based on his outdated philosophies.

He's been the only one pointing out the flaws in Hendry's be aggressive, swing swing swing, give me some athletes, damn the computers philosophy. But he's a beat writer who does it more subtly than a bombastic columnist would. Others have attacked Hendry, but they only do it because attack is their only style. And they don't even know what they are attacking.

This is a really good summation of why, for example, you shouldn't put any stock in the vitriol directed at Kenney, even if it's coming from 8 different local columnists.

I didn't know where else to put it, so rather than start a new thread, I planted it here.

Alfonso Soriano told Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes that he doesn't regret signing a free agent deal with the Cubs, even though the last three years have been disappointing for the team (link in Spanish).

I'm SO glad that Mr. Soriano doesn't regret signing a bloated contract that will probably keep the next 3 generations of his family very rich while he gave us 2 good seasons, 2 productive seasons, and 1 bad season plus whatever else is to come. And here I was feeling sorry for him.

Why feel sorry for him?

Because (according to the quote) the team has been a disappointment and Soriano thought hewas signing on with a winner.

I was just stating the ridiculousness of anyone even asking him if he regretted the contract to begin with. There are a lot of people who should regret that contract, but Alfonso isn't one of them.
