I can't believe the support around here for Kenney...is he running this website?

Its not about "defending" Kenney. If anything, I would believe that most people are pretty indifferent about the guy. The problem comes because it seems like a lot of writers are ripping the guy without providing any sources or specific evidence for why the guy will be a problem. And given the fact that many media members have also pointed out how Hendry went on a massive PR campaign to make sure everyone believed that the Soriano, et. al., contracts weren't his fault, why should anyone not believe that the Kenney hate stems from conversations with Hendry?

Its not about liking Kenney, its about being analytical and skeptical of people who throw ad hominem attacks on the guy without any evidence.

Then why are there so many media members with negative things to say about him? I don't think its a coincidence

So you agree with them that Aramis Ramirez is a selfish, lazy player?

There's a Buster Olney article on Insider about Andrew Friedman and the Cubs are brought up. Don't have insider though so I couldn't read the whole thing. Anyone want to paraphrase if there's anything written about the Cubs specifically?

The fact that Chicago baseball writers don't like Kenney actually makes me like the guy a little bit more.

B/c you are more in tune w/ the league than them? Id like to know what questions you asked Hendry during his press conference on Friday.

B/c I know more about baseball than most of them, and understand how a president of the team, in charge of the business side, won't have any influence over a GM who reports directly to the owner, you know, the guy who hired the GM. It doesn't take someone who is a beat writer to figure that out. In fact, those beat writers, who are probably biased against Kenney because they like Hendry are probably in a worse position to be critical than I am, looking at it from the outside with no biases.

Again, Nowak, I need to ask, what your specific issue with Kenney is.

I'm still not convinced Nowak isn't Phil Rogers, or Gordon Wittenmeyer or some other meathead writer (no offense Bruce) trying to gauge interest in Kenney being fired.

To be honest, I'm half joking.

My concern is that if there is this much negative publicity, it could impact who we hire as the next GM. I have no reason not to believe the media members that Kenney could be issue in the hiring process. They are around the Cubs and have their sources....I obviously don't. I understand there are no specifics other than what they are writing. Why would there be this many people lying? Again, where there is smoke, there's fire.

Because part of their job is to create that smoke and start the fire.

I do think Ram has been lazy at times, but I don't think he's selfish. I could hav e cared less that he wanted to be w/ his family instead of a 4th replacement in the All Star game

But, why is there that much smoke to begin with, both locally and nationally?

All this nonsense about Kenney making Hendry give out 8 years to Soriano, was it not proven that it was the Tribune ownership who wanted him to give that out? Yes, Kenney was apart of the Tribune, but people are acting like it was Kenney alone who did it when wasn't it the Tribune ownership as a whole who pushed it on Hendry?

The Tribune was terrible ownership and yes, Crane Kenney is a leftover remnant from that terrible ownership, but if the OWNER of the team says Crane Kenney doesn't have any involvement with baseball related decisions, I'll take his word over a bunch of sports writers who, by and large, are [expletive] terrible at their jobs.

Well, I hope you are right. I guess the only thing we can do is wait and see who's hired.

You're missing the point; you're placing so much stake into media speculation as being accurate when these are the same guys who have spent Aramis' career in Chicago railing against him for being a subpar player/teammate.

Because if it bleeds it leads. Nobody's going to write a story that says "things look great for the Cubs!"

Kenney runs the business of the Cubs. Business is good. Hendry ran the baseball operations.

It's not that hard to understand.

I really, really want Friedman.

I was trying not to think that big prior to the report that they are looking to hire an experienced/successful GM.

Hopefully, he'd opt for the resources/market and added luster of breaking the "curse" over the home town connection in Houston. Or we could just offer him more money.

But what if he demands that Crane Kenney be fired?

It says Andrew Friedman is disgusted that Crane Kenney is still breathing.

I do think Ram has been lazy at times, but I don't think he's selfish. I could hav e cared less that he wanted to be w/ his family instead of a 4th replacement in the All Star game

The enablers just look the other way and blame the media. He hustles selectively and is disinterested at times. Even in 2000, SI wrote this about him:

Just 21, Aramis Ramirez was given the third base job this spring when the Pirates let Ed Sprague walk as a free agent. Offensively, the Pirates know Ramirez is ready—he had 21 homers at Triple A Nashville last year. But he also made a ghastly 42 errors in the minors and three more after his September call-up. "He has fine hands and a good arm," says general manager Cam Bonifay. "Mental lapses led to those errors." Manager Gene Lamont sat down with Ramirez during a winter trip to the Dominican Republic to stress the importance of off-season work and to make sure Ramirez had his head screwed on right.

So the Pirates and Cubs have both recognized that he'll trot to first base on a grounder and not give it his all on every play. Considering what the alternatives for 3rd may be in 2012, where you gonna find 30HR and 90 RBI? Don't know if it's worth $16-18M, but at least you know what ya got. Is he a leader on the field and in the clubhouse? No.
