i hope Paul Sullivan gets butt cancer

I hate the headline writer even more. Lots of things could've been said that would've actually been true. "Lapse costs Cubs" isn't one of them.

Oh, and if you want to be pissed off at how stupid people are, read the comments on that article.

Sullivan's just being Sullivan, but these comments by Sveum sound like a manager who's talking about benching him for more than a game or two. Even if it's just idle threats, it's not cool to publically ridicule your 22 year old budding superstar like that.

"It's the last straw," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "He better start getting his head in the game, period."

"It's not acceptable. These things have got to stop happening, or we're just going to stop playing him. These kind of things are things my son does in high school, maybe."

Bone headed plays or not, we're at the point where there's little at stake, so there's no excuse to bench your most talented player. Consider it on the job training.

I don't think our manager can afford to think that way. He obviously wants to win games and it's not happening.

I just don't get this. He has brain-cramp for the first time this season, and now he has to be benched for the latest in "a series of mental gaffes"

Help.

It's not his first brain cramp. It really won't hurt anything to bench him for a game in a meaningless season to make sure he doesn't forget how many outs there are in the future.

How does benching him for one game help him make sure he doesn't forget how many outs there are?????????????????

Castro's shortcomings are definitely more mental than physical, and he's had multiple instances where he's made simple mistakes that shouldn't be made. While making these shortcomings a character flaw like the media will(rather than addressing it as you would Darwin Barney getting physically run down last year) would be a mistake, it's still something that you want to fix. I don't think it's short-leashed of them to be nearing a disciplinary point with it considering Castro's penchant for these goofs. The rub is all in how that's implemented, and I don't see any reason to think it won't be handled in the proper manner given the parties involved. Sveum is well respected by the players while still conveying some blunt truths at times, and Castro for his part appears very repentant about the issue. Regardless of how you want to spin Sveum's quotes in either direction, it seems apparent that Castro is going to sit if he makes a dumb mistake like that again. That can still be done the wrong way, but I think communicating that threat/reality to Starlin(who clearly doesn't want to leave the field, nor make these mistakes any more) could be an effective way of getting him to focus.

Nailed it.

TRADE HIM

This is the poll question on the Tribune website right now. Over 40% of idiots who voted said they wanted the Cubs to trade him.

Jesus. I bet of those 40% nearly all of them would rather have David Eckstein or Theriot back as the SS over Castro too....

There's a commenter who wrote that when all is said and done, Theriot will have better career numbers.

Sox fans love to vote for the dumbest option on those polls though.

I remember seeing a WSI thread about skewing some tribune poll at one point.

In other news, Jon Morosi is a moron:

Starlin Castro makes too many mental mistakes. Not sold on him as a championship player. @McLellan2 @patsandjays

Hey, I'm not sold on him as a championship player this year, either.

Thank God Starlin will mature before it matters!

It's rather unfortunate that his development has to be witnessed by so many morons (morans). Instead of focusing on his age and all the things he does well, some people are going to ignore the givens and make little flaws big flaws.

I hope someone in the organization is telling him the right things, even if they have to pay lipservice in the press.
