"Cubs should trade Castro to an AL team that can use him as DH, because he has no business playing in the field."

What did you do with your 2-year-old when he or she didn’t pay attention or listen? You put him or her in a timeout, right? Punishment equals learning.

Professional teams put players in timeouts. They’re called benchings. That’s what the Cubs need to do with Castro.

Or maybe Sveum is waiting until Castro lays on his back during an inning and makes dirt angels.

Rosenbloom (don't actually click that link)

I'm sure that you'll find your share of Cubs fans who say the same thing, or at least that he should be moved to the outfield. Doesn't make it any less stupid, but the fact that this person is a White Sox fan is kind of irrelevant.

I wonder how much of this is due to being on a losing team that is out so early (this year and last). Some people only really hone in when the games matter.

If this were any other shortstop in the league, it would be something that people chuckle over and forget about.

To be fair, if other players had screwed up 3 days ago too, they'd be getting [expletive] for it from the meatballs too.

Hell, I'm not really happy about him doing it at all, but the outcry is even more ridiculous.

Didn't Rickie Weeks do this like 3 weeks ago?

And Milton Bradley 3 years ago. Similar anyway.

It happens every single year at least 4 or 5 times. Not excusing it, but this isn't exactly unprecedented.

also from that article

I guess the cubs decided to sit Barney instead, and make Castro cover the entire middle infield (nice job Sullivan you hack):

Here's the lineup against the Brewers' Yovani Gallardo:

Campana CF

Castro SS

DeJesus RF

Soriano LF

LaHair 1B

Clevenger C

Stewart 3B

Dempster P

What new joys can we expect from the peanut gallery come tomorrow in regards to his baserunning (not really a) gaffe?

i don't know... but sports radio was far more unlistenable than usual today. it sucked. seemed everytime i'd turn it back on, they were talking about it and/or how sveum was a coward or something for not benching him.

It was a gaffe, albeit a pretty common one. Theriot especially specialized in it. But it was definitely an error in judgement.

I disagree; the whole thing went down because the ball was basically hit in just the "right" spot to pick him off. He was only too far off the bag in the sense that he wasn't accounting for that specific placement of the ball. Hit it pretty much anywhere else where a runner on second would have to hold up and he's fine.

Maybe Dale will decide that from now on he'll take it up w/ the offending player in the clubhouse instead of venting in front of the media. I'm not excusing Starlin's brain fart(s), but providing sound bytes only adds fuel to the fire, IMO.

Speaking of gaffes, my friend read the ESPN title that read something like "Gaffe could send Cubs' Castro to Bench," and proceeded to ask me (seriously): "Who's Gaffe?"

None, other than the stupid ones anyway. I really thought he should have kept running to 3rd and would have had a decent chance of getting in because of how far the 3B was off the bag.
