I'm good with this as long as we don't have to see the Twilight version of Sammy, that one scared me.

"I'M SOOOO REEEEEEEEEALLLLLLLLL."

Though at least he looks normal in that Cialis commercial.

He just thought that was his best bet for Cubs fans to embrace him again.

Well that was damn funny.

Yeah, but does he get the all important Ryne Sandberg vote of confidence now that he's a gritty white guy?

I don't hate Sammy for what he did in game 162 in 2004. I do and did dislike what he did and don't blame his teammates for being pissed at him.

I think that was the most frustrating season I have had as a Cubs fan. I was at all three games at Shea in September. They won Friday night and the wheels came off on Saturday and Sunday (I vividly recall the Saturday game ending with Ben Grieve taking three straight strikes without so much as lifting the bat off his shoulder, for example). Add to that the whole thing with Merker yelling at Stone on the team plane, Dusty making excuses for everyone and everything, and Sammy's exit in game 162 and you have one of the least likeable Cubs team of my lifetime.

Then there is, of course, the steroid thing. Sammy tested positive in 2003, which means he lied about his use of the stuff. I don't know if that's a huge deal or not inasmuch as most of basbeball was probably using at one time or another, but I haven't seen too many organizations embracing guys who were caught up in or implicated in those issues - Bonds, McGwire (ok, he's the hitting coach, but he's being shielded by LaRussa and the rest of the franchise and was in hiding for about eight years), Palmiero, Clemens, etc. All of these guys are all-time greats (with Bonds being perhaps the greatest player ever), so its not as though Sammy is alone in being ostracized.

Frankly, I also think it doesn't help that he has apparently bleached his skin, Michael Jackson style. It adds to the whole creepy, freakshow vibe of this thing.

I think the passage of time will help things along. Perhaps in the next 5 years we'll see his number retired, which is probably appropriate.

Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Jack Cust, Brendan Donnelly, Gary Sheffield, Paul Byrd, Ivan Rodriguez, Andy Pettitte, Brian Roberts, Gary Matthews Jr, Jerry Hairston Jr, Rick Ankiel, Troy Glaus, Matt Williams, Jose Guillen, Magglio Ordonez, Mike Piazza, Ryan Franklin, Sergio Mitre, Manny Ramirez, Edinson Volquez along with a bunch of nobodies that nobody ever cared enough to have an opinion on pre or post-steroids

Thought I'd post this again.

With all the discussion about the skin bleaching, I just wanted to check whether Sammy is on the left or right in this picture.

that's a great picture. i still love sammy. he is just someone you root for. i was at the corked bat game and i recall that at least in my section he was pretty much forgiven after a few minutes and everyone just heckled rocco baldelli instead.

Well, Rocco Baldelli was a pretty big jerk, so that's understandable.

Perhaps in the next 5 25 years we'll see his number retired in joint recognition with Tyler Colvin, which is probably appropriate.

It's a little more plausible this way, though the skin bleach may help him out there.

No argument here, but I was referring to players who were all-time greats and who might otherwise be embraced as such by their respective franchises, have their numbers retired, etc. if not for the PED's issue. From your list I think that could include Pudge (Tex), Pettite (NYY), Piazza (NYM) and Manny (BoSox).

Giambi and Sheff have great numbers but their prime years don't really "belong" to one franchise (especially Sheff). Ortiz is definitely a BoSox, and he's effectively been "forgiven" by being productive and popular in the "post steroid" era, so I'd be surprised if his number weren't retired by the Red Sox.

ARod is interesting. He's had amazing years for all three franchises he's played for, but I think he's identified as a Yankee and has been embraced there. By the time his career is over he will have played at least ten (10) seasons for them, won at least one WS, and put up some enormous numbers. I think he has a good shot at having his number retired as well.

Silvy just tried to press Ricketts hard on the question about specifically what he means about Sammy needing to do to make amends or whatever and Ricketts of course sidestepped it

at the game saturday I was mildly surprised to see a Sammy-centric video on the jumbotron. Also, the jumbotrons were not at all intrusive and definitely fit into the environment.

Dammit when I saw this bumped I was hoping someone posted news about Sammy throwing out the first pitch at a potential playoff game or something.

I almost wonder if the clubs informal relationship with Kerry Wood has anything to do with not welcoming him back yet. As we all know, Kerry destroyed the boombox, so I'm guessing he was one of teammates that couldn't stand him. Perhaps the organization wants him back but really wants Sammy to publicly grovel, so that it doesn't look to guys like Woody and Lee and other former Sosa teammates the team has a relationship with like they are just caving in.

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but I thought Wood was quoted earlier this year saying that the club should welcome Sosa back.
