I don't get the Theriot 2.0 reference. The Cubs handled Theriot almost perfectly. They didn't hand him the starting job to start 2007. They squeezed two good seasons out of him in 2008 and 2009. They made it very clear in his arbitration hearing that they didn't feel he was worth a lot of money. When a better SS came up, they moved him off the position, and then quickly traded him after that. Theriot's a great example of how you handle a player like that.

Yeah, that's pretty accurate. The only thing that really bothered me about the handling of Theriot was when we ran him out at SS and stuck Cedeno (the much better defender) at 2B. Of course, that was all Lou and only Lou.

When Hendry had control over the situation, he absolutely handled Theriot correctly.

Aramis has said that he'll veto any trade to any team. Aight Mr. Cub Jr., put your money where your mouth is. I say they void that 16 mil option and offer him a 3 year 25 mil deal with some decent incentives. Lets see once and for all if he really loves being a Cub or just isnt in the mood to relocate.

would that contract include the option to turn down the contract and go take a not-ridiculous offer from another major league team?

I know, considering the fact that he's having an amazing season and the next best 3B options are Casey Blake and Wilson Betemit, Rammy should be looking at a large payday, one bigger than an injury prone 34 year would normally get. I just don't get why he wouldn't gladly move to a contender at this point. Yeah, his family is here, but he'd only be in Chicago half the time and I'm sure he has enough money to temporarily relocate them.

You don't "get" why the guy doesn't want to go to a different team?

I hear the Pirates are contending. Time to double-dip.

Aramis for Alvarez

Not that we'd get Alvarez but I could see us and the Pirates matching up for a trade or two if they are willing to take on some salary. I would imagine they'd have some interest in Aramis, Dempster, Zambrano, Byrd, Fukudome, and Baker.

WSCR is reporting ARam told the Cubs after the game he is now willing to possibly waive his no trade if they find a trade partner

Rami appears to reverse position on no-trade: "They come to me with a trade, we'll see."

More Rami: I understand its a business.

MAKE THAT: "I understand it's a business ... If they're looking to rebuild, I can't fit in. So we'll see."

At this point I would see no reason why Ramirez is not worth more than Beltran based on health alone and have a better season.

My guess is he could bring in a top 10 prospect packaged with another top 20 prospect and maybe more depending on how much salary the cubs eat.

If Ramirez is traded, the entire team should be blown up. I just don't see how this team could compete without him, especially considering the list of available 3Bs in free agency in the offseason is ugly. I don't see anyone in this system capable of replacing his production come 2012, either.

Well that doesn't make me optimistic about the near future. If we do trade Aram, we better get at least one

of somebodies top 10.

Ramirez + Byrd+ $$$$ to the Phillies for Dominic Brown and a prospect or throw in Polanco to take him off their hands.***

No way his production can be replaced internally. We'd have to get very creative on the trade market or sign an entire new outfield. Gonna be tough to do it all and replace the FO is the same offseason.

We could get away with some unholy combination of DeWitt/Baker/Flaherty/LeMahieu/Vitters next season if this team was better, but I just don't think the offense is good enough to cover for that kind of downgrade from Ramirez and I don't think the pitching is good enough to compensate for that loss of offense.

While I wouldn't say I am in favor of trading Ramirez, I do have serious doubts that this team has any chance with him next season. I think it has to be explored to see what the potential return could be. If there is a deal out there worth doing for the future, it might be the right move.

This team is bad, and I feel it will get worse before it gets better.

There's really no reason to blow this team up. The division is likely to be mediocre, at best, next year and there are some really big time FAs on the market this offseason. The only reason we should trade Aramis is if somebody blows us away, but if we do I think we can still have a chance to compete next year with the right moves.

Who would you trade as part of blowing the team up?

I agree that the team likely can't compete without him, but it is apparent that the team can't compete with him either. Yes the division is bad, but I still think it is unrealistic to believe that a couple tweaks are going to have the team competing for a World Series title next year. I'm not for trading Aramis at all costs, but if he brings appropriate value for his current production (read as high-end prospects) then I think the Cubs have to make the deal and deal with finding a replacement later.

Who besides Ramirez would bring back top talent? I like the idea of dealing marshal and marmol because the cubs do a really good job of developing reliever types. Even if we end up getting guys that are in the 7 through 15 range of a teams top 15 prospects back I think it could be worth it. Reed Johnson should be traded but we shouldn't expect much more than what fukudome brought back. Bryd and Pena may bring back some better prospects it depends upon how much we pay though. If we do these moves get some decent possibly major league ready talent back and make some free agent acquisitions, and call some guys up we may have a pretty solid team going forward in my opinion at least. If ramirez is traded we have to hope that Flarehty turns out to be a stud or at least a really good platoon guy with baker.

I think the phillies would give up quite a bit to get Ramirez more so than they were offering for pence. Probably their top pitching prospect and Brown. In that series against us Mayberry looked awesome but I think he is 27 already so he is probably not a target.

Signing guys like Wilson and Prince/Pujols isn't just "a couple of tweaks."

how often in baseball does one team sign two of the top 3 free agents? Granted I know we have the money but it just doesnt seem to happen to anyone other than the yankees and redsox.
