The longer Tom Ricketts waits to pull the trigger on Hendry, the more it looks like 2012 won't be any better for us. What does he think will change in the next couple months that isn't apparent now? I thought the Ricketts family had done their homework PRIOR to buying the team and not have an almost 2 year learning curve.

Unless he has a currently employed GM that he can hire on Day 1 of the off season, then he needs to stop fooling around, fire Hendry today and get this guy on board. If he waits, you're asking the new guy in October to assess the organization on talent, enter the free agent process and may even look for a new manager in a period of a couple weeks. Tough job to do. I would believe that a top level asst GM probably knows the talent pool better because that's his job to provide evaluations to the GM. And I would hope that Ricketts knows the list of those people right now.

The end of the season. What's the point in letting him go during the season? That'd be stupid.

How's that? I'd rather give the new guy a few months to evaluate the team and Quade before Oct. 1st.

If they're firing him, then they would be waiting for other teams GM's to become available. Those GM's have contracts too and can't leave their teams during the season.

Of course, they also could be waiting because they felt the flaw in the organization was somebody other than Hendry and have decided not to fire him.

What's the benefit to firing Hendry mid-season? As CCP pointed out, we can't hire a new guy until after the season (unless Ricketts is targeting a currently unemployed GM), but also we probably can't even interview a currently employed candidate until after the year.

So our best case scenario is having Randy Bush take over as interim GM for the rest of the season and go through the same process of finding a permanent GM after the year, just like we would if we had kept Hendry.

Hendry's best trait is his ability to get back talent in trades. Let him do that and then cut him in the off season. Besides, unless your next GM is sitting around jobless at the moment then what's the point of firing Hendry now? Wait until the off season when that candidate is available then make the move.

Exactly.

This has been discussed at length elsewhere, but firing Hendry without a legitimate replacement in place will pose problems come the trade deadline. The only thing worse than a lame duck GM at the trade deadline, will be a desperate interim GM who is angling for the full time job and does something stupid. Plus, as has been noted, Hendry is good at getting value in return in trades, so it makes little sense to cut a strength from the front office at this point.

I have always believed that if you intend of firing someone, do it now. There is no reason to keep a lame duck in place

I can come up with a ton of reasons - Hendry is pretty good at trades, Randy Bush may not be good at trades, Randy Bush may be desperate to try to win the full-time job, we can't interview/hire currently employed GM candidates in-season anyway, Hendry might be a little more up to date on some of the draft picks we took than Bush.

What are the tangible benefits to firing Hendry midseason?

How would his midseason replacement not be a lame duck?

In principal I agree with this but these guys make some compelling arguments and have sold me on this as well. Yes if we wanted pat gillick it would make sense but hes already close to his 80's and probably not up for it. any other potential gm's are employed with other clubs right now. I don't want randy bush either. You have to admit Hendry really hasnt had too many bad trades. About the only guy he may regret is nolasco for pierre. this tampa bay one still remains to be seen. So at this point in the season with the trade deadline coming up let hendry do what he does. To remove him now would be foolish.

personally though, I think hendry stays for next year. Maybe not even as a gm maybe he takes crane kenney's role as president.

The myth that henry is great at midseason trades is just dumb. If he was good at that they wouldn't suck so often. And the notion that the best and only candidate for the Kobe is a currently employed gm is just a superficial nonsensical made up restriction against making change. If you want hendry gone you want him gone today. There is no justification for wanting to wait.

They don't have to be a GM. They just have to be employed in some capacity by another club for it to be almost impossible to hire them in season like this. How many great GM candidates are currently completely unemployed? By late August/September teams will be much more likely to give permission for interviews.

And I would agree that Hendry is not great at mid-season trades (although he is pretty solid). But he is probably better than the alternatives inside the Cubs organization.

I'll ask again - how are the Cubs better by firing Hendry immediately? How does it benefit the team/franchise/organization by firing him and replacing him with an interim GM?

I have trouble believing there are great GM candidates sitting around at home unemployed.

for the Kobe?

Maybe he's saying we should hire Kobe Bryant to take over for Hendry - that'd be the positive for letting Hendry go now since Kobe could start immediately.

Guessing "jobe" and autocorrect.

As to the argument itself, while there's plenty of cause to fire Hendry that doesn't mean that the best opportunity to do so is right now. Patience is a virtue.

you want Hendry gone and you wanted it to happen long ago. We got it. But there's a lot wrong with this post.
