I haven't really watched or listened to the games this year, but is Quade really doing that bad of a job? I find it hard to believe that any manager could get this team winning, so I don't hold that against him much, what is he doing so terrible?
well we could start with the fact that he has zero clue about how to construct a line up and follow with the fact that he seemingly never cared to figure out how to handle a pitching staff...i'll let someone else pick it up from there.

Try watching a game and decide for yourself.

My philosophy with managers is that all of them are going to do things I disagree with, and they may be right about some of those for various reasons. But the two things I'd require of a manager is that they play the correct players, and they don't overwork starting pitchers. Quade has been fine about doing the former, and has had some shaky moments with the latter. I'm not all that unhappy with the job he's done so far, but I'm not campaigning for him to stay on if management gets sacked.

He insists on playing DeWitt in LF and the other day in a close game he had Campana pinch hit in the 7th or 8th and then had DJ LeMahieu pinch run the next inning. Those moves should have been reversed. When Soto was hurt, like Lou, Quade played Koyie Hill daily instead of giving Wellington Castillo a chance.

This team is not good, but Quade hasn't shown much either. Guys like LaRussa make some head-scratching decisions, but they seem to get the most out of the talent on the roster.

Anyone know how many times Cubs pitchers have gone over the 110 pitch mark this season? I feel like Quade hasn't done a stellar job of handling the pitching staff, although that's based more on my perception than anything else.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2011-starter-pitching.shtml

Not sure about 110+ but Cubs starters have thrown over 100 pitches 31 times this year which ranks 119th in the majors. The two at 120+ is tied for eighth in the majors and the single game max of 128 is tied for fourth in the majors.

I like the part of the article where Hendry basically admits he's been a failure

"I expected us to win at a higher level than three division championships even the first six years when it was going a lot better, I expected more out myself then," Hendry said. "This is professional baseball in a big market, with a great fan base. We should have done better the last year and half, that comes with the territory and that is my responsibility."

Well said. Every manager in MLB has fans calling for his head. Can't please all of the people all of the time, and all that...

the thing with Quade is that I don't see how he fits in the plan.

If they go the route of making a big splash with big-time free agent signings, then is Quade the guy to manage a veteran laden team?

If they go the route of building from within and having a lower pay roll --- is Quade the guy for that?

I don't think so. He's very expendable and although he hasn't done terrible, its not like he's done anything that screams "I'm a great manager." Let him go. . . no hard feelings.

Actually Quade probably would be a good choice for the "building from within" model. His history is in the minor leagues, developing a lot of the same guys that he'd have at the bigleague level now.

Not that I expect they're going that route.

Gotta clean house and let a new GM bring in a manager.

Why not? It's not like he's a gem who should be spared in the potential purge. If a new baseball minded president comes in, I'd just as soon let them build from the top down.

Firing him now would be pointless, but giving him the boot with Hendry and Kenney in the offseason doesn't seem like a pointless move.

If the new FO was adamant about hiring a new manager, fine. If not, meh. Quade is nowhere near being a dealbreaker.

Right. He's made some questionable decisions with SPs, but he's far from Dusty territory. He's not doing a bunch of micro-managing, from what I've seen. So if he's not causing undo harm to pitchers and not bunting in the first inning, for example, who cares. I wouldn't be surprised if a new GM kept him on, at least in the short term, unless there's a specific manager available that the new guy wants.

Defending Quade is the last thing I want to do, but DeWitt has actually acquitted himself pretty well in LF. No, he'll never be a ML regular there - or anything close to that - but now we know he's a guy who can play all over the field in a pinch. That's good information to have going forward.

Yeah, pretty much. Given that he'd only be here the first year and doesn't have a reputation as being a "problem" it wouldn't surprise me at all if a new FO just let him rid out the first year of transition and then lets him walk after his deal is up after 2012.

I think he's done a horrible job managing his starters, pushing them too far from the start and foolishly risking injury after an hour rain delay. On top of that, I think he's completely in over his head. I also don't see any possible way that a new GM would hold onto Quade for his lame duck season. That's a bad way to start off your regime, and once you fire the guy a year later you've already used up one of your GM lives.

Technically they wouldn't be firing him a year later if they just opt to not re-sign him.

Sure, but that's still having a GM's first year clouded by a lame duck manager and giving the impression of starting from scratch one year later. If you are a new GM coming in this year, you are either going to look at Quade as a longterm option, or hire your guy. Letting him be a lame duck is pointless.
