I'd be interested in trying to hire Jocketty away from the Reds.

Didn't he hire Dusty? If so, that alone makes me pass.

Dusty was already there when Jocketty took over. Dusty was hired Oct. 13, 2007 while Jocketty took a job as the Reds' special advisor on Jan. 11, 2008 and then took over as GM on April 23, 2008.

He did give Dusty a two-year contract extension in 2010, though.

Aren't the Cardinals in pretty dire shape right now when it comes to their farm system?

I think they had a pretty decent season until they started giving away their best minor leaguers for DeRosa, Holliday and others. It's in pretty bad shape now I think, but I don't know if it's more because of Jocketty, Mozeliak or both.

They've never really had a deep one, but they always seem to have one or two really good prospects. Right now it's Shelby Miller. They've always used their farm system to acquire talent from other teams (Edmonds, Rolen, Holliday, etc.). Either way, it's been productive for them.

Did anyone else just hear Cowherd say that Hendry was fired or being fired?

I can't find anything other than that. Anyone else hear anything along those lines? I'm not trying to start anything, could have sworn I heard Cowherd say that.

Sounds like Cowherd read speculation and mistook it for an actual report, then rescinded his statement after the commercial break.

To be fair, they got Jim Edmonds by trading away a 30 year old 18 game winner.

On the flip side they did use their system to acquire Mark Mulder.

On the flip side, with Mulder they failed to trade for the extended warranty which your always supposed to do anytime you aquire a pitcher from Billy Beane and the A's.

Should we trust Hendry to handle the trade deadline with our long-term goals in mind?

Good point. Unless Hendry signs an extension before July, I think we all know that answer.

I fear if we are within 6 games by the break, Ricketts will consider the first half to be a result of injuries. One more piece and the division is ours, baby!

This is what I fear... Ricketts deciding to give Hendry yet another year because the injuries were out of his control, ignoring the fact that the lack of depth in the system has been exposed at almost every position.

Probably as much as we could trust an interim GM like Randy Bush. From a pure job security viewpoint, Hendry is probably a better option than promoting an interim GM midseason. Hendry will see himself having a shot at keeping the GM job beyond this season no matter how the team performs in the second half (pointing to injuries, primarily) while an interim GM is clearly fighting for a permanent job.

Hendry's a much better bet to have the long term interest of the team in mind than an interim. That's not a reason not to make a move if you feel it's necessary, but concern over his long term outlook shouldn't be a reason to fire him.

This is a precarious situation, IMO. I don't think firing Hendry now would be a great idea, but firing him after the season could really compromise an important offseason.

I think there are three viable options:

1. Identify a long term replacement now and fire Hendry in season, maybe around the break.

2. Have a replacement in waiting and replace him immediately after the season.

3. Let him finish his contract, risking him making ill-advised desperation moves.

Really, I've just become even more disillusioned by the way this season has gone. Peculiar roster management and piss poor team management. Quade has been a massive disappointment, not the record (which is bad), but the way he has managed the team. I thought we had a more pragmatic manager in Q, but he has been anything but. And knowing how loyal Hendry is to his hires, I'm not sure we'll get rid of one without booting the other.

What I think this organization really needs is a sharp baseball mind between Ricketts and Hendry.

gvillecub : ryan dempster :: jeffh : jim hendry

Gvilles hate for Dempster is far more bizarre and unwarranted.

By far.

which makes it very different than hatred for Hendry
