NCAA investigating Ed Orgeron too for his recruiting of Brendan Warner. Warner committed to Tennessee, then decommitted when Kiffin left, went to UNC and then got a hardship release and ended up at UCLA.

Tennessee is going to have to take some sanctions, as they should. But, I would also like to see the NCAA do the right thing once, and punish the coaches responsible for the violations as much or more than the coaches who had nothing to do with it.

Another thing that would make sense (hence the reason the NCAA would never do it) is to consider the impact that alleged violation had on the program. In this case, a committed player ended up decommitting because of this stuff, which has already hurt the program. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it should absolve the program, but at least consider how this improper action actually benefitted the program.

So, as we await a 5 scholarship reduction for two years, Kiffin is off in LA appealing his way to 26-man recruiting classes.

not sure i agree too much with the premise that the NCAA should factor in how a team benefits from infractions when they administer punishment.

Minor detail, but it's Brandon Willis. Willis is at the center of the hostessgate investigation. He and Corey Miller were committed at the time the hostesses went to the game in SC. After hostessgate initially broke, Willis decommitted. He recommitted after Orgeron put him through the illegal workout and decommitted again after Kiffin left.

Enrolled at UNC, played in the Spring Game there, then transferred to UCLA.

Someone at another board created and posted this cool little chart. Ideal is top right corner - sign a great class (disclaimer: uses Rivals rankings) and have the majority of the kids actually enroll. The worst is bottom left - your class ain't that good and you oversign or otherwise can't get them all to campus (i.e., grades, legal troubles, kids that fall off balconies).

Alright dew... the Chuck Smith rumors have kicked back up. The word about a week or two ago was "he's gone after signing day." And now it's starting to sound like that might happen very very soon.

I hope they know what they're doing. He seemed to be the guy in charge of us coming out of nowhere to nearly get Wright and Jernigan. Kinda hate to see him go.

Whoops. Yeah, I meant Brandon Willis.

Sounds like they do. Hubbs and others are saying that Smith was showing up late to meetings toward the end of the year, didn't really want to put in the work that kids require, and that Thompson was the one doing the DL adjustments the 2nd half of the season. There are also a couple recruiting guys saying that Smith epically botched a couple of recruitments, including Jeoffrey Pagan. Apparently, Lance Thompson was charged with cleaning up alot of Smith's mess on the field and on the recruiting trail.

I hate all that, because Smith is a Vol. He's not just some guy who took the job to have a job, but a guy who returned to his alma mater. It sucks to see it happen this way, but if he wasn't willing to do his job and work with other coaches, then it's best for him to go.

I'm excited to see what Sirmon brings to the staff.

Yeah, if that's all true then it's the right move. Like you, though, I have an extra interest in Smith doing well since he's a former player and there's a connection there.

Sirmon being a former Titan makes that move pretty cool for me. He was a decent enough player, but often it seems the worse the player, the better the coach. He always seemed pretty intelligent and I have little doubt about his coaching ability, but I wonder how well he can recruit.

Here we go:

In what was termed a mutual decision according to a school release on Sunday evening, UT announced the first departure under Dooley's watch with defensive line coach Chuck Smith parting ways with his alma mater to "pursue other career opportunities." There will be no search for a replacement though, with graduate assistant Peter Sirmon earning a promotion to coach linebackers and Lance Thompson sliding down to fill the void left by Smith.

And now Janzen Jackson has left school. He's still officially on the team and is expected to take summer classes and use a one-time waiver that will allow him to play next year (which will be he last in Knoxville.) But as of today, he is not a student at Tennessee.

So that means that Kiffin's first and only class at UT currently looks like this"

Bryce Brown: gone

David Oku: gone

Nukeese Richardson: gone

Janzen Jackson: gone*

Mike Edwards: gone

Ted Meline: gone

Jerod Askew:gone

Darren Myles: gone

James Green: did not qualify

Awesome.

And we'll get sanctions from his tenure to boot. I'm happier all the time that Lane skipped town for USC.

The NCAA is going to have to rewrite the rule book where sanction follow the coach wherever he goes.

Yeah, that would make sense. But the NCAA rarely makes sense.

I am waiting for the NCAA to punish the Wake Forest baseball team for donating a kidney to one of his players for improper benefits.

Well Pearl will almost certainly get show-caused if it makes you feel any better. (I know it makes me feel better) Tennessee deserves a lack of institutional control, and I imagine Kiffin will go too far eventually and go running back to the pros as an offensive coordinator or something

That would be a tough benefit to repay . . .

The Jim O' Brien/Ohio State ruling has really hamstrung schools with regards to reacting to coaches under investigation. Sampson stuck around at IU for another month or 2 after it was obvious he was going down, and now Pearl is doing the same at Tennessee.
